    PROGRAM AND POSITION OVERVIEW:

Southwest Conservation Corps: SCC empowers individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment.

SCC is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization that engages ages 14-30 in conservation based projects on public lands. SCC programs encourage environmental stewardship, civic engagement, and emphasize experiential learning. After completing 8 weeks of training, SCC’s Youth Crew Leaders work in counties located around Salida and the San Luis Valley with local students, ages 14-18 on conservation based projects in those counties.

The AmeriCorps (AC) Crew Leader Development Program (CLDP) is a two-phase program.  The first phase focuses on orientation, training and development; the second phase focuses on implementation and continued leadership development. The AmeriCorps CLDP provides young adults the opportunity to develop outdoor conservation and leadership skills; participants will be exposed to a variety of conservation projects, leadership experiences, and service opportunities on public lands and in local communities throughout the Southwest region of Colorado. Basic program structure will include:

    • 8-weeks of crew leader training with experienced SCC crew leaders and staff. Trainings will include: Introduction to SCC mission, staff, and culture, SCC policies and procedures, risk management, managing crew dynamics, front country and backcountry outdoor living, Leave No Trace, Forest Service recognized S-212 Chainsaw training, technical trail skills, project management, partner relations, logistics and Wilderness Medicine (WFR). The work schedule during technical trainings is primarily 10 days on and 4 days off.
    • Co-leading youth conservation crews in counties located around Salida and the San Luis Valley with local students, ages 14-18. While co-leading, CLDP members will be responsible for project management, as well as the care and well-being of a 6 - 8 person crew, completing conservation projects in those counties. Crew Leaders in Development are responsible for the physical and emotional well-being of the crew in the absence of their co-leader.
