Officers are needed for year-round temporary work, however we have a current need for candidates with interest to work during our busy winter season (particularly during Zoolights - November and December). The Oregon Zoo has positions open for temporary Safety and Security Officers. Schedules are based on zoo attendance and weather. Safety and Security Officers assist in managing large crowds; assist with medical and police, enforcing all rules, regulations and laws. A temporary employee will generally not perform the full scope of duties as listed in the job classification. Provides exceptional customer service to visitors. Patrols a 65 acre area, often on foot (may exceed 10 miles per day). Patrols parking and shuttle lots by vehicle (with valid driver's license). Place signs along roadways for shuttle activation (lifting required). Investigates suspicious persons or activities. Answers questions and provides information and directions. Investigates complaints and recommends corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints. Assists medical personnel by directing traffic, crowd control. Checks facilities for needed maintenance and repairs. Turns lights and alarms on and off as needed Maintains time, equipment use and incident records Write detailed security incident reports (data entry skills needed). Maintains radio communications with supervisors and other security agents. Responds to all alarms and evaluate for additional response. Responds to all emergency code calls. Assists in the evacuation of patrons and employees in emergencies. Provides medical assistance. Minimum Requirements High school diploma, or GED; and Six months of responsible experience in providing security; or Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill and ability required for successful performance of the essential job duties. This position requires; Possession of a DPSST certification. Valid driver's license. Possession of or ability to obtain, a CPR, First Aid and AED certification. Knowledge, skills and abilities Knowledge of materials, methods, practices and equipment used in security services. Knowledge of safe work practices. Ability to maintain operational records and prepare related reports in writing and on a computer. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to walk up to ten miles per day. Ability to use a two-way radio. Ability to read and comprehend Fire Alarm System panel to determine location of fire. Ability to accurately assess a medical situation and respond appropriately. Ability to run from one area of the facility to another in an emergency situation. Ability to protect one's self in an altercation. Ability to work irregular hours (holidays, evenings and weekends). Ability to obtain CPR, First Aid and AED certification.
