POSITION SUMMARY The Animal Care Technician is a vital member of the OHS Shelter Operations team and is responsible for providing the highest quality of care to animals in residence at the Oregon Humane Society. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and medicating animals on a daily basis. Stock areas, spot clean kennels and public areas throughout the day. Provide enrichment to animals while monitoring their health and temperament and assisting the Animal Care Supervisor in accumulating information important to the overall care of the animals. All OHS staff members contribute to the stewardship of the organizations mission and are expected to stay current on and understand issues related to animal welfare and OHS programs. This document does not create an employment contract implied or otherwise, other than an at-will relationship. * Work daily with animals of varying size and temperament, handling individual animals in a safe, caring and respectful manner. * Provide continual coverage to animals and the public in assigned area, leaving area only upon request of supervisor or with adequate coverage to perform assigned tasks. * Act as a vital member of the Shelter Operations team by cleaning, feeding, exercising, medicating and providing necessary supplies to all shelter animals in assigned department according to established procedures. Collaborate and communicate effectively with Shelter Operations and Shelter Medicine staff regarding any animal in residence. * Maintain daily knowledge of animal inventory, shelter events and special needs of the shelter. * Observe the health and temperament of shelters animals, document and report changes to supervisor. Perform data entry and documentation in to OHS information database in a timely, accurate and understandable manner. * Maintain a clean, safe and orderly work environment by continually cleaning up after animals and proactively monitoring animal areas for cleanliness. * Greet and interact with the public in a friendly, professional, and respectful manner at all times. Work with the public, staff and volunteers to resolve complaints and issues in a productive and collaborative manner. * Monitor all animal related information on kennel cards, correcting errors and adding new information upon observation. Ensure that all animals are correctly identified and that all cages have accurate animal information posted. * Adhere to all OHS safety, training, handling and transportation protocols in order to ensure that the Shelter environment is safe for animals, the public, volunteers and other employees. * Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. On daily basis, read communication log and memos. Keep current with shelter event and program updates. * May be required to transport shelter animals to or from offsite locations using shelter vehicles. Vehicles must be maintained and operated in a safe and responsible manner at all times and damages or maintenance reported to Supervisor immediately upon observation. * Assist in training new staff /volunteers. * Continuously improve working knowledge of animal breeds and behavior training skills Qualifications EDUCATION, TRAINING AND COMPETENCIES: Minimum Requirements * High school graduate or GED equivalent. * 1-2 year(s) related work experience in customer service and/or animal care * Excellent verbal and written communication skills. * Able to communicate with a diverse population in a consistently informative, respectful and professional manner. * Able to maintain a professional appearance and exercise sound judgment during all interactions with the public, staff and volunteers. * Knowledge and experience working with a wide variety of dog and cat breeds. * Basic working knowledge of computer hardware and software programs. * Able and willing to be certified in CPR and First Aid. * Able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as requested. Preferred * 2+ years related coursework at an accredited college or university WORKING CONDITIONS * Work is performed in an animal shelter environment, with occasional exposure to various outdoor conditions. * Holiday, weekend and evening work may be required. Reliable attendance is required. * Animal contacts and related injuries may occur. * Noise exposure varies and frequently includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations. * Animal waste related contact, smells and visual exposure is prevalent. * Contact with angry or emotional people may occur.
