    LENGTH Approximately 9 months LOCATION Based in Kykotsmovi AZ, Crew will travel to project site in Escalante UT. LIVING ALLOWANCE $300 per week. AMERICORPS AWARD 900 hr Term; and a $4,144 Education Award. AGES 18-30 START DATE March 11th, 2019


    AMERICORPS PROGRAM OVERVIEW  – BETTER THE LAND – BETTER YOURSELF! The Southwest Conservation Corps Ancestral Lands engages motivated young adults, ages 18 - 30, to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Projects may include, trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects.  Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises. Each crew will consist of 3 members and 2 leaders. Crews work and camp for up to 10 days at a time in frontcountry and backcountry locations in all types of weather conditions. Schedule may vary depending on location and program. SCC crews work in a variety of national parks, national forests and other areas throughout the Southwest. Crews prepare all their own meals and work together as a group to complete all the necessary chores.

    The Hopi Saw Crew will be working and camping in Utah removing invasive species as part of a larger watershed restoration initiative. Saw crews will be working 9 day Hitches in 9 hours shifts cutting, and applying herbicide to invasive species such as Tamarisk and Russian Olives. Our programs focus on place based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility and career development. SCC AL also provides an opportunity for Corpsmembers to learn about the local environment, environmental issues and introduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers.  When not in the field, members are expected to find their own housing.

    Required Skills

    SAFETY -You will be expected to take a serious attitude toward safety all day and every day.

    PROFESSIONALISM – AmeriCorps members must be willing to appropriately represent the SCC Program and AmeriCorps.

    TEAMWORK – AmeriCorps members must be willing to work hard, participate as part of a team.

    TECHNOLOGY – The use of technology, including cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, and other battery powered devices is not allowed during all work, chore, group and meal times as well as during de-rigs and rig-up.  Corpsmembers must agree that they will not use these types of technology while participating in these activities and realize that technology use is strictly regulated by SCC policy and by SCC staff and crew leaders.

    SUBSTANCE FREE – In accordance to a drug free workplace, alcohol, tobacco and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and SCC activities and while on SCC property.

    FITNESS – AmeriCorps members are expected to complete projects that involve heavy lifting, hiking, and living outdoors for an extended period of time.

    PARTICIPATION  - Americorps members are expected to participate in all non project work related activities such as group activities, camp duties (cooking/dishes), as well group discussions.
