    TITLE: Youth Crew Leader 

    REPORTS TO: Program Director

    LOCATION: CL’s will be county based- Costilla, Mineral, Saguache, Alamosa, Conjeos, Park, and Chaffee Counties

    STATUS: Seasonal, Full-time, Exempt  

    WAGES: $685/week 

    BENEFITS: PTO, Benefits if employment exceeds 6 months, Food provided while in the field, uniforms, protective equipment, U.S. Forest Service recognized S-212 Chainsaw training, Mental Health First Aid Training

    SOUTHWEST CONSERVATION CORPS (SCC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps affiliated organization, whose mission is to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment.  SCC supports youth (14-18), adult camping crews (18-30), and Veteran fire crews (18-35) with crew based programming to complete challenging and impactful conservation projects throughout the Durango and Salida regions. Projects include trail construction and maintenance, habitat improvement, invasive species removal, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on partner needs, including disaster relief (fall season only). SCC crews work in national parks, forests, county land, and other public lands throughout southwestern Colorado.

     

    This position is an opportunity to make a difference in young peoples’ lives. Leaders will be mentors, educators and facilitators for high school students, working to increase youth resiliency, build confidence and to be positive role models for their members.  SCC’s Youth Crew Leaders will spend 8 weeks in a crew leader training period, which will include a Leadership skills week, an S-212 Chainsaw training, technical trails training, a youth crew leader training, and prep weeks in addition to project work. In late May, leaders will work in partnership with a Crew Leader Development Program member to co-lead two 5-week sessions with high school students ages 14-18.  Sessions will be Monday-Friday, are day or camping crews and locally based in small rural communities in central Colorado. INDIVIDUAL MUST BE COMFORTABLE WITH WORKING REMOTE IN A COUNTY THAT COULD BE UP TO 2 HOURS AWAY FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE.

     

    Required Skills

    ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

    LEADERSHIP & MENTORSHIP

    • Manage, supervise, and participate in day-to-day details of crew life during service and work projects and in camp if applicable.
    • Implement skills training and facilitate intentional discussions via informal lessons to contribute to the crew’s personal growth and group dynamics.
    • Design and implement specific educational activities as appropriate.
    • Promote individual Corpsmember development and a healthy community.
    • Must have diplomacy and skill when speaking with partners, youth, community members and parents.
    • Must be willing to represent with professionalism SCC and the program.

    SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT

    • Monitor, manage, and promote the crew’s physical and emotional safety on and off the work site.
    • Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety
    • Transport crews and equipment safely in SCC’s 12-passenger vans or large SUV’s.

    PROJECT MANAGEMENT & IMPLEMENTATION

    • Train and motivate a crew of 6 – 10 young adults to efficiently complete conservation projects on public lands.
    • Coordinate logistics with project sponsors, co-leader, and SCC's Field Coordinator and SCC Program Director

    ADMINISTRATION

    • Complete professional documentation of time sheets, daily and weekly reports, corpsmember and peer evaluations, incident reports, etc.
    • Manage food budget and credit card as appropriate

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Required to walk, sit and talk or listen in a variety of conditions- outdoors, high and low temperatures, at altitude and during weather events.
    • Required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms.
    • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to focus.
    • Must be able to pass a thorough background check, including driver's background check.
    • Must have valid driver's license for minimum three years before start of training (May 23, 2016) and have minimal infractions. (Must be able to be insured by SCC driver's insurance).
    • Required to drive an SCC vehicle, and must be able to speak, understand, read and write English.
    • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    Required Experience

    RESPONSIBILITIES/REQUIRED SKILLS: 

     

    LEADERSHIP & MENTORSHIP

    • Manage and supervise project work.

    • Model strong communication and conflict resolution skills

    • Mentor Crew Leader in Development.

    • Follow and enforce all SCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent Southwest Conservation Corps. This includes creating a substance free work environment, refraining from the use of tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs while involved in the program.

     

     PROJECT MANAGEMENT & IMPLEMENTATION

    • Instruct, train and motivate a crew of six to eight high school students to complete high quality conservation projects

    *Implement an 8-hour workday and ensure professionalism is maintained at camp

    • Delegate project work and camp chores

    • Effectively coordinate logistics with project partners, co-leader, & SCC staff

     

    RISK MANAGEMENT

    • Analyze, manage, and promote the crew’s physical and emotional safety on and off the work site

    • Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety

    • Transport crew and equipment safely in SCC’s vans or large SUVs with trailers

     

    ADMINISTRATIVE SKILLS

    • Meet all deadlines for documentation ie. time sheets, evaluations, incident reports, disciplinary action forms, ect.

    *Record all project and related outcomes and deliverables.

    • Manage food budget and credit card for purchases, providing receipts for all purchases

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Frequently required to walk, hike, sit and talk or listen

    • Required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms

    • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to focus

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Leadership experience with youth.

    • Must hold current/relevant medical certification (WFR, WEMT, or OEC) with CPR/AED

    • High School diploma or GED certificate

    • Must be able to pass a criminal history background check

    • Must be 21, have a clean driving record (insurable by SCC) and a current driver’s license.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience with experiential and/or environmental education

    • Experience with SCC or other conservation corps or youth corps

    • Strong conflict resolution skills

    • Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference and promote leadership in others
