SOUTHWEST CONSERVATION CORPS (SCC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps affiliated organization, whose mission is to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. SCC supports youth (14-18), adult camping crews (18-30), and Veteran fire crews (18-35) with crew based programming to complete challenging and impactful conservation projects throughout the Durango and Salida regions. Projects include trail construction and maintenance, habitat improvement, invasive species removal, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on partner needs, including disaster relief (fall season only). SCC crews work in national parks, forests, county land, and other public lands throughout southwestern Colorado.
This position is an opportunity to make a difference in young peoples’ lives. Leaders will be mentors, educators and facilitators for high school students, working to increase youth resiliency, build confidence and to be positive role models for their members. SCC’s Youth Crew Leaders will spend 8 weeks in a crew leader training period, which will include a Leadership skills week, an S-212 Chainsaw training, technical trails training, a youth crew leader training, and prep weeks in addition to project work. In late May, leaders will work in partnership with a Crew Leader Development Program member to co-lead two 5-week sessions with high school students ages 14-18. Sessions will be Monday-Friday, are day or camping crews and locally based in small rural communities in central Colorado.
