    PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The AmeriCorps(A*C) CLDP is a two phase program.  The first phase focuses on Corpsmember (CM) experience, while the second phase focuses on leadership development

During the first phase of the A*C CLDP CM™s are placed on a crew of their peers and mentored both by senior Crew Leaders and SCC Program Staff.  The crew will be introduced to: conservation projects and technical skills, crew-based community living and camping, outdoor environmental education and SCC™s CM Development process to include goal setting and evaluations.

The second phase of the AC CLDP focuses on direct experience. During the second phase, the AC CLDP CM™s will actively practice and role model crew leadership skills under the mentorship of the Crew Leader and SCC Program Staff.  Members may be placed in leadership opportunities on a variety of projects and crews depending on the region and season in which they are serving.  Leadership opportunities may include positions on conservation crews, youth crews, specialized technical crews and/or individual projects.  At this point, the A*C CLDP members will be challenged to assist with member trainings, build positive crew dynamics, coordination of member development activities, and project site leadership.

The A*C CLDP program strives to provide meaningful trainings to all participants during their term of service.  The trainings vary depending on region, season and project work.  Trainings may include: Crew Leader Training, SCC-Facilitated Technical Trainings, S-212, rock work, Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Leave No Trace (LNT) and fence construction.

    Required Skills Required Experience

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:   The CLDP emphasizes Leadership, Conservation, and Corpsmember Development.

LEADERSHIP  CLDP crew members must have experience or a strong desire to mentor a diverse group of young individuals.  A*C CLDP members provide leadership in SCCs service programs as Assistant Crew Leaders and they will lead, mentor, manage, and participate in the day-to-day details of crew life at work.  Leadership duties with SCC require that all crew leaders must have a clean driving record (insurable) and a current drivers license.  IF YOU HAVE ANY MAJOR DRIVING INFRACTIONS WITHIN THE PAST 5 YEARS (I.E. DUI, DWI, ACCIDENTS, RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT, ETC.), PLEASE CHECK WITH SCC TO CONFIRM WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE INSURABLE.  FINAL ACCEPTANCE DECISIONS ARE CONTINGENT UPON YOUR DRIVING RECORD.  INDIVIDUALS THAT CANNOT BE INSURED UNDER SCCS INSURANCE POLICY MAY NOT BE SELECTED FOR THE CLDP PROGRAM.

CONSERVATION  Previous experience with a conservation corps is preferred but not required. CLDP participants will spend their first 8 weeks with SCC learning and strengthening their conservation skills on projects throughout the Four Corners. These skills will include, primarily, trail maintenance and construction and forestry work; additional skills that may be gained (depending on contract work) include fencing, invasive species identification and eradication, stream and river restoration, habitat restoration, ecological restoration, campground improvement, and rock work. CLDP members will receive training and certification on the proper use and safety of a chainsaw (if applicable).

CORPSMEMBER DEVELOPMENT  Previous experience as an outdoor educator and/or mentor is preferred but not required.  Must have a strong desire to teach and implement a Corpsmember Development Program which includes personal, professional, and educational components. CLDP participants spend their first 9 weeks familiarizing themselves with this program and practice facilitating different aspects of the program with the rest of the crew.  During this time, CLDP corpsmembers are mentored by their Crew Leaders and SCC staff.

IN ADDITION CLDP PARTICIPANTS MUST UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR:

COMMITMENT  AmeriCorps members must make a strong commitment to complete all aspects of the program including conservation projects, education, training and national service.  Members must commit to participating in all crew activities, including service days in local communities.
