This is a client funded position. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity. For current State employees, please note that as of June 1, 2018, promotional priority and salary administration will be made based on the new Statewide NC Classification System. The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the State of North Carolina in court and provides legal advice and representation to most state government departments, agencies, officers, and commissions. The Department also represents the State in criminal appeals from state trial courts, and brings legal actions on behalf of the state and its citizens when the public interest is at stake. The employee in this position provides legal secretarial, administrative, and other support to the Division of Health Service Regulation's attorneys. The employee provides support for three to four Assistant Attorneys General. This entails screening and routing materials, filing and retrieving information and documents, providing telephone and receptionist services, typing and proofreading, composing legal documents and correspondence, preparing records and reports, scheduling depositions and meetings, making arrangements for court reporters and room reservations, and tracking cases. The attorney-client privilege must be maintained at all times. However, this employee also does court filings, picks up and delivers materials to the Division of Health Service Regulation and other intermittent out of the office duties as needed. In addition to the above, the position types all correspondence and legal pleadings, motions, memoranda, and briefs for the attorneys. The employee also makes all travel arrangements for the attorneys. The employee performs these office duties with minimal supervision and oversight by the attorneys. The employee is the key player in keeping the office up-to-date on Division requisition policies and procedures. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Comprehensive knowledge of office techniques; skill in organizing work flow and coordinating activities; ability to practice effective communication techniques both orally and in writing; ability to comprehend basic issues; ability to identify and establish priorities, plan and organize for both the section and the employee's individual work; ability to follow specific instructions and to work independently without supervision; ability to maintain composure under periods of extreme pressure arising throughout the office; advance word processing, including Word, WordPerfect, and Excel; ability to set up files; ability to properly route incoming mail and documents; ability to use Microsoft Outlook; and basic understanding of various legal documents. This employee must be assertive, make decisions. This employee must be flexible in all areas, possess a specialized knowledge of office procedures and guidelines, particularly correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and formatting. A basic knowledge of legal terminology is essential as is a basic understanding of various legal documents; must possess a specialized knowledge of legal processes, procedures, and practices. This employee must have the ability to prioritize tasks, proof her own work and that of others. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
