Murdoch Developmental Center is a state residential facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities/ developmental disabilities located in Butner, near the Research Triangle area. Murdoch is a caring community where professionals work with people of various ages, cognitive, and functional abilities. To be considered for employment, applicants must be in good standing with the North Carolina Personnel Health Care Registry. This is a continuous posting for multiple Youth Program Education Assistant I (YPEA I) vacancies. It is not necessary to submit more than one application. The Youth Program Education Assistant I (YPEA I) position located in Murdoch Developmental Center's Statewide Programs, provides services to individuals with intellectual disabilities/developmental disabilities who display extreme behavioral challenges. YPEA staff accompany individuals to classrooms as teacher assistants and job sites as job coaches. Professional services are available and staff coverage assures safety and enhanced programming 24 hours per day. YPEA staff receive extensive training in Person-Centered Planning, North Carolina Interventions (NCI), Behavior Intervention Procedures, Skill Training Procedures, and Positive Interaction Procedures. All programs utilize an Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) approach and are designed both to reduce behavioral excesses (e.g., physical and verbal aggression), as well as to accelerate positive social skills (e.g., communication, conflict resolution skills, and cooperation). Treatment also includes training in the areas of self-help, education, communication, vocation, and recreation as deemed necessary by the interdisciplinary treatment team. Behavior programs are carefully integrated across all areas of training and are designed with consideration for the individual's eventual return to the community . All individuals in each program have histories of aberrant behavior commonly including physical aggression, verbal aggression, property destruction, spitting, running away, self-mutilation, and noncompliance. Statewide Services Treatment Programs: The Behaviorally Advanced Residential Treatment (BART) program serves males over the age of 16 having mild intellectual developmental disability (I/DD) and/or other developmental disorders, who demonstrate extreme and dangerous forms of aberrant behavior and have histories of failed treatment placements and/or repeat criminal offenses. The Next Step Program is an extension of the BART Program in Meadowview Cottage. The Next Step Program supports adult males who have a mild intellectual developmental disability (I/DD) and /or other developmental disorders, and who have historically demonstrated significant and serious behavioral challenges. The Next Step Program is designed to support individuals who are preparing for community transition. The programming focus for person's living on the Next Step Unit is two-fold; the acquisition and maintenance of skills necessary to live in a community setting, and the maintenance of a positive behavior pattern conducive to sustaining community placement. YPEA staff working on the Next Step unit will assist individuals with independence training, vocational training/ job opportunities, continuing education opportunities and overall daily living independence. The Specialized Treatment for Adolescents in a Residential Setting (STARS) program serves male and female adolescents, ages 13 through 17, from across the state who have a dual diagnosis (intellectual developmental disability and mental illness), and demonstrate extreme and dangerous forms of aberrant behavior. The program operates an on-campus school site. The Partners in Autism Treatment & Habilitation (PATH) program serves children from ages 6 through 16 from across the state that have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and demonstrate serious behavioral challenges. The PATH program has three components: The first is a residential unit which includes capacity for 12 individuals (both male and female) 10 regular admissions and 2 respite admissions. The second is a group home (PATH Home) located in Oxford (Granville County) that serves four individuals. The third is another group home (Wright Home) in Franklinton (Franklin County) that also serves four individuals. The program operates a public school classroom with a PATH teacher and staff as well as an on-campus school site. The Murdoch ASD Treatment and Clinical Habilitation (MATCH) program serves adults (males and females) with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and demonstrates serious behavioral challenges. A consistent routine is offered that includes vocational training. The Therapeutic Respite Addressing Crisis for Kids (TRACK) program serves children ages 5 through 17 from across the state that are diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder and are in an emergency behavioral crisis situation. The TRACK program is specifically designed to divert children from emergency departments and psychiatric hospitals with a limited stay between 7 and 45 days. Murdoch Developmental Center and Statewide Programs are currently recruiting for the following shifts: Work Schedule Shift Premiums 1st Shift: 6:30am 3:00pm 5% Weekend Only 2nd Shift: 2:30pm 11:00pm 20% Weekday & 25% Weekend 2nd Shift Floater: 11:30am 8:00pm 20% Weekday & 25% Weekend 3rd Shift/3rd Shift Floater: 10:45pm - 6:45am 10% Weekday & 15% Weekend Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must have the following demonstrated abilities as demonstrated through past work experience and/or education: To carry out and make on the spot decisions about behavioral intervention programs especially in crisis situations Working knowledge of basic health care, hygiene and safety To follow oral and written instructions To report information both orally and in writing Knowledgeable of the emotional needs of individuals with special needs (Adults and or Children) Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively Successful candidates must have the ability to use Murdoch Center Program Library or a similar instructional system. Employee will be required to complete Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) skills and certification in first aid and CPR. Management Preference: Knowledge of and experience applying interventions based on Applied Behavioral Analysis Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Associates degree in human services or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications As required by facility, CPR certification and listing as a Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation required prior to providing direct patient care.
