    CREW: American Sign Language Inclusion Youth Camping Crew

    TITLE:  Crewmember  

    REPORTS TO: Crew Leader, Program Coordinator

    LOCATION: Chattanooga, TN                

    STATUS: Seasonal-Summer Program, 3-week session

    STIPEND: $300 per week before taxes; food, transportation during the 3-weeks program and camping gear provided

    SOUTHEAST CONSERVATION CORPS: SECC EMPOWERING YOUNG ADULTS TO CULTIVATE COMPASSION, RESPONSIBILITY, AND GRIT THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE, HARD WORK, AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP.

    The Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization in Chattanooga, TN. This summer SECC will run its first American Sign Language Inclusion .(ASLi) crews. During the three-week program, members will camp out, working on conservation projects during the week and weekends will be filled with education and recreation activities. This program will be the first of its kind in the Southeast region and will increase opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth to work outside, learn job and leadership-development skills, and gain technical conservation field experience to increase their career opportunities.  This program seeks to provide an opportunity where Deaf youth and young adults can learn job and leadership development skills in their native language from other Deaf members and leaders, participants will be better equipped to find future employment while simultaneously expanding the representation of Deaf people in the outdoor and conservation fields in hopes of growing opportunities for the Deaf community.

    Each crew will be two leaders and six members ages 16 - 19.  Each crew will camp throughout the entirety of the three-week program. All members will need to commit to the entire length of the session they join and be willing to camp for all three-weeks.

     

     

     

    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    WHO CAN PARTICIPATE/SHOULD APPLY:

    • Teens ages 16 – 19* *during program
    • Deaf or Hard of Hearing applicants will be given preference
    • Willing to camp and live outdoors in group setting for whole program session
    • No experience is needed to apply for this position.

     

     

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    • Conservation projects combine training and education in a wilderness setting.
    • Projects will focus on trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, re-vegetation, and more
    • Each ASLi Crew will be 6 youth corpsmembers and 2 experienced leaders
    • Crews are in the field working and camping Monday - Friday
    • Crews share camp chores such as cooking meals for breakfast and dinner, cleaning, etc.
    • Weekends will include education/service/recreation days
    • Weekends will include basic task such as doing laundry, grocery shopping as a crew, and showering
    • All camping equipment, personal work equipment, uniform shirts, and meals (weekends included) will be provided during the program
    • Transportation: Transportation is provided while in the program, but members are expected to transport themselves to and from the SECC office at the beginning and end of the program.
    • Members must be able to be away from home for three weeks and must agree to follow our Technology/Phone Policy*

     

    *TECHNOLOGY/PHONE POLICY: ASLi Youth members will have pre-scheduled access to their phones during the session on reoccurring days/times Outside of prescheduled time, member cannot have or use cell phones or other technology as determined by SECC staff. Guardians will be notified of the phone access schedule so they have the opportunity to communicate with their child.

     

     

    CORPS MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES: As an SECC YCC program participant you must be able to:

    • work as a team member

    • be open-minded and respect others from different cultures and backgrounds.

    • perform heavy manual labor related to environmental conservation and restoration projects;

    • work and live outdoors in wilderness areas and during all types of weather

    • camp overnight outdoors in wilderness areas near work sites for duration of program learn and apply new environmental conservation, restoration and outdoor living skills

    • participate in group activities

    • practice appropriate safety procedures at all times

    • learn and practice ‘Leave no Trace’ techniques

     

    EXPECTATIONS: SECC is a drug-free organization; alcohol and illegal substances are prohibited.

     

    PROJECT WORK: Projects will vary but can include trail construction and maintenance, ecosystem restoration, habitat restoration, fencing on public lands, invasive weed removal, and many others.   While the staff at SECC works to provide consistency throughout the season schedules, times, and work locations are subject to change.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify, you must be between the ages of 16 and 19 at the time of the programs start date, and a US citizen or permanent resident. Deaf and Hard of Hearing applicant preferred.

     

    PARTICIPANT ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

     

     

     

     

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Frequently required to walk, hike, sit and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
    • Required to use hands to operate equipment and tools and to reach with hands and arms
    • required to use close vision and the ability to focus
    • must be able to understand and communicate in English

    COMPENSATION: YCC members will receive a stipend of $300 per week before taxes.
