POSITION: 14ER CONSERVATION CREW MEMBER

ABOUT THE POSITION

Colorado is known for its soaring peaks, and none are more famous than those that rise over 14,000 ft in elevation, often referred to as 14ers. As an AmeriCorps participant of one of the Southwest Conservation Corps ‘14er’ crews, your office will be the high alpine environment on the slopes of one of these peaks. Your crew will consist of  6 to 8 members and 2 leaders. Crews work and camp for 8 days at a time in either frontcountry (access to your crew vehicle and trailer), or backcountry (hiking all your supplies in with backpacks) locations, in all types of weather conditions. You will work as a member of the crew; perform heavy manual labor, and complete conservation projects using a variety of manual and power tools. You will participate in environmental education activities. Risk management is of utmost importance, and all procedures must be followed at all times.

Your main project for the summer will include intensive trail construction & maintenance in high elevation terrain. Other projects during the season may also include habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation, and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.

Schedules generally are 8-days on and 6 off. There is a possibility you could work 5-days on and 2-days off, or a variation of schedules requiring all AmeriCorps crew members to show flexibility. SCC does not provide housing on your off days.

All crews will go through an unpaid, 5-day orientation. Food and space to camp is provided for this training.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

QUALIFICATIONS:

• To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
• A US citizen that has received (or on track to receive) a high school diploma or GED
• All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check.

PARTICIPANT ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Essential eligibility requirements for the program must be met. If you are unable to meet certain requirements, we may be able to assist you with some modification unless it alters the fundamental nature of the program, compromises the health and safety of participants or staff, or places an undue financial or administrative burden on the organization.

• Ask clarifying question when you do not understand a task
• Maintain focus during workday, both while traveling and working in varied weather conditions.
• If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage without assistance from others.

ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS & OUTDOOR SKILLS

• Learn and safely perform fundamental outdoor living and work skills as appropriate to the project.

• Live in a physically demanding, possibly remote environment for an uninterrupted period of up to several weeks

• In accordance with a drug-free workplace, alcohol and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and SCC activities, and while on organization property.

Required Skills Required Experience

Load and unload aircraft of cargo weighing up to 70 lbs. in and out of aircraft within confined cargo areas, push, pull, and position loaded containers weighing up to 3,200 lbs. on rollers with/to aircraft.

Driving vehicles with gross weights of 3,000 to 80,000 lbs. in areas congested with aircraft, moving and stationary vehicles and equipment as well as positioning vehicle up to aircraft requiring depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors, red, green, and yellow.

Engage in push-out of aircraft driving 80,000 lb. vehicle or assist by providing guide function to driver using depth perception in congested areas or speaking to cockpit during push-back procedure.

Transport cargo to and from aircraft driving 3,000 lb. vehicle using depth perception to negotiate vehicle with attached carts through congested area.  Read "off-load" sheets to determine destination of cargo.

While performing aircraft push-out and/or towing functions, engage in proper specific ground to cockpit communication via hand signals and voice commands, with and without, the assistance of sight or visual aids.

Ability to successfully communicate with others.

Ability to work in a high-noise level environment.

Ability to understand and react to verbal commands and safety warnings, with and without, assistance of sight or visual aids.

Pull, push, and lift bags weighing up to 70 lbs. onto or from a conveyor belt.

Pull water hose from stationary cabinet and connect to aircraft.

Lift, connect overhead and remove overhead, 40 lb. KVA electric cable to/from aircraft.

De-ice aircraft at heights of up to 20 - 80 ft. lifting and holding nose, spray exterior of wings and fuselage with glycol.

Ability to judge distances.

Ability to confront and question unauthorized personnel in secured areas, and report their presence to authorities as necessary.

Reports to work on a regular and timely basis.
