    SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ORGANIZATION CO-OP OVERVIEW

    Envision working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Co-Ops.

    The Science & Technology (S&T) organization within AbbVie Operations leads the optimization, validation, implementation, continuous improvement, and global technical support for therapeutic proteins. The S&T Co-Op program provides students with robust projects based on business need. Students will do meaningful work that has a real impact on our business and patients worldwide. Possible Co-Op assignments are in the following departments:

    BIOPROCESS DEVELOPMENT: The department’s mission is to design, deliver and support the biologics manufacturing process for AbbVie’s pipeline and partnered products through clinical development and commercial life cycle with quality, speed, and manufacturing excellence. This is achieved through a focus on targeted product quality, CMC acceleration, people development, and efficient workflows. Key groups include:

    • Cell Line Development - responsible for cell engineering and development

    • Cell Culture Process Development - responsible for cell culture media and process development

    • Purification Process Development - responsible for clarification and purification process development

    • Scale Up Lab - bridges cell culture and purification process development scale to manufacturing scale

    • Commercial Manufacturing Support - offers technical support and continuous process improvement for commercial drug substance manufacturing

    ANALYTICAL DEVELOPMENT: Responsibilities include development of analytical methods for transfer to Quality Control and performance of extended characterization of proteins using state-of-the-art instrumentation for evaluation of primary, secondary and tertiary structures of proteins. The department also supports development activities of the other groups within the S&T organization and provides analytical support for late-stage, R&D, and discovery projects. Key groups include:

    • Biomolecular Interaction Group for biological function assays, impurity assays and testing

    • Separation and Automation Technologies Group responsible for monoclonal & non-mAb program development, automation, and testing

    • Analytical Characterization Group for in-depth characterization including mass spectrometry and biophysical testing

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

    • Executes experiments in bioprocess development and manufacturing support with supervision.

    • Performs basic data acquisition and analysis in a timely manner. Assists in experimental designs and data interpretation.

    • Documents work appropriately in lab notebooks and technical memos; contributes to writing technical reports

    • Maintains lab equipment and optimizes lab operations for efficient use of time and resources.

    • Troubleshoots equipment and experimental problems.

    • Assists in continuous improvement activities.

    LOCATION: Worcester, Massachusetts

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s (Junior/Senior year), Master’s or PhD programs in a scientific or engineering discipline (preferably Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Biosciences/Bioengineering).

    • Must be able to commit to a 6-month program at AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC) in Worcester, MA (starting in June)

    PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (OPTIONAL):

    • Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher preferred

    • Excellent problem-solving, written, and verbal skills

    • Exceptional interpersonal, leadership and project management skills

    • Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, initiative, and integrity
