    DISCOVERY ONCOLOGY INTERN OVERVIEW

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Experiential Interns.

The Tumor Dependency group within AbbVie Oncology is focused on the investigation of pathways that are critical to tumor maintenance and viability, and the identification of key nodes within these pathways that are amenable to therapeutic intervention. The Tumor Dependency scientist that will supervise the Discovery Oncology Intern is currently engaged in research involving a specific signal transduction pathway that is currently the target of marketed drugs. While effective, these drugs cause side effects in human patients that can limit their efficacy while reducing patient quality of life. AbbVie is currently developing novel modalities that can perturb this cancer pathway yet potentially circumvent these side effects through targeted delivery. The position of Discovery Oncology Intern will involve the generation and execution of assays to further the understanding of how these new modalities engage with the pathway, as well as the downstream impact of these modalities on the cancer cells. The intern will work with a highly accomplished senior scientist while also engaging with an experienced team that has a track record of success in the drug discovery setting. Further, the intern will become exposed to, and proficient in, the key activities associated with advancing cancer biology knowledge and discovering potential medicines that can positively impact human health.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Execution of western blot experiments to study the impact of therapeutic agents on cancer cell signaling pathways

    • Execution of cell viability experiments to determine the impact of therapeutic agents on cancer cell viability

    • Generation of data sets that inform the larger team as to promising directions of modality optimization

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or other related field

    • Must be enrolled in university during the internship period

    • Expected graduation date between August 2023 - July 2026

    • Curious, eager to learn, and ability and interest in working with a highly engaging team

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Exposure to academic literature involving biological sciences or biologically related engineering

    • Coursework in basic biology and biochemistry

    BENEFITS AND AMENITIES

    • Competitive pay

    • Travel, transportation and lodging support for eligible students

    • Exposure to top-notch scientists with diverse backgrounds and identities
