ANALYTICAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

The Analytical Research & Development (Analytical R&D) organization is a world-class analytical team of more than 300 scientists that drive scientific excellence and process understanding through innovative solutions. Analytical R&D is responsible for all Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (CMC) analytical activities related to the development of AbbVie's products. During the internship, the intern will have the opportunity to work on key aspects of developing fundamental scientific understanding as it relates to AbbVie projects and processes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:
Develop liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) techniques for the in-depth characterization of therapeutic proteins
Support sample preparation for high resolution LCMS analysis
Optimize specialized protein separation techniques to enable the analysis of interested product quality attributes. Troubleshoot equipment and experimental problems
Design, develop and optimize instrumentation and separation parameters, including HPLC and high-resolution mass spectrometer, for peptide and PTM quantitation and detection
Conduct laboratory studies to investigate post-translational modifications (PTMs) occurring on therapeutic antibodies (mAbs) and antibodies drug conjugates (ADCs)
Establish an improved analytical method for PTM level analysis in our product development pipeline
Test different internal standards to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of our assays
Perform the analytical tests to characterize the structure of antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) and understand the kinetics of reactions in ADC conjugation process
Interact with cross-functional teams to establish productive collaborations
Analyze and interpret data; organize and document data in a lab notebook
Present work and results in team/group meetings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field
Must be enrolled in university during the internship period
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers
High attention to detail, creativity in problem solving, strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to successfully work independently and as part of teams.
Ability to work on multiple and simultaneous projects as part of a team in a global, fast-paced, setting where priorities may change quickly
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Expected graduation date between December 2023 - December 2024
Previous work experience in a laboratory setting
Previous experience with operating high-resolution mass spectrometry, or protein separation techniques (ion exchange chromatography, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, etc.), or protein labeling and derivatization techniques required
