COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY/BIOINFORMATICS INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Experiential Interns.
The Computational Biology/Bioinformatics Intern will work with the Computational Genomics team, the Genomics Technology team, and different Discovery CompBio teams (Immunology, Neuroscience) of the Genomics Research Center (GRC) at AbbVie. The GRC is a multidisciplinary center of excellence with expertise in genomic technologies and their application, human genetics, genomic medicine, computational analysis, data integration, genome biology and application of functional genomics.
The Computational Biology/Bioinformatics intern will work with two scientific mentors to systematically compare spatial transcriptomic technologies from Nanostring and 10X Genomics (GeoMX vs. Visium) across different therapeutic area applications. Evaluation will include biological readouts such as mapping of celltypes, phenotyping of tissue microenvironment, differential expression patterns of a celltype based on spatial location and ligand receptor analysis, but also consider practical considerations, such as throughput, eligibility for focused vs. exploratory analysis, resolution, and experimental complexity. At the end of the internship, the intern will be able to analyze different types of spatial transcriptomics data, interpret the results, and provide guidance on the usage of these technologies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Determination of key metrics to comparatively evaluate spatial technologies across different applications
Implement data analysis workflows and custom scripts for comparative analyses; usage of AbbVie Github
Data analysis and interpretation; establish and document recommendations for future decisions across therapeutic areas
Present results in team/group meetings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biology, Pharmaceutical Science, Computer Science or other related field
Must be enrolled in university during the internship period
Knowledge in R or Python programming
Strong written, verbal and oral communication skills
Must be organized
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in spatial transcriptomics data analysis or in single cell transcriptomics data analysis are highly desired
Exposure to neuroscience or immunology related projects
Strong quantitative and analytical skills
Strong presentations skills, including the ability to deliver complex quantitative analyses in a clear, concise, and actionable manner to extended team and small groups of key stakeholders
BENEFITS AND AMENITIES
Competitive pay
Travel, transportation and lodging support for eligible students
