NEGLECTED DISEASES INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Experiential Interns.
Interns will learn the basics of medicinal chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry drug discovery process by participating in an active project in neglected disease research. They will help design and synthesize potential drug molecules under the guidance of experienced scientific supervisors. Interns will be taught effective scientific communication techniques (verbal, written, and combinations in presentations) through the examples of the supervisors, practicing with fellow interns, and direct guidance by the supervisors. Interns will learn to use project relevant design software, information gathering programs and data analysis techniques employed by medicinal chemists in their daily work.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:
Independently synthesize, purify, and analyze chemical compounds utilizing standard chemistry procedures, purification techniques, and quantification methods.
Utilize ChemDraw
Conduct scientific literature reviews
Learn electron arrow pushing for organic reactions
Learn physical-chemical properties in drug design
Use SciFinder
Calculate properties in AIDEAS
Learn basic ADME principles and assays
Work with bioisosteres
Use Cresset Spark/Drug Guru
Conduct molecular modeling
Participate in bi-weekly journal club and mechanism meetings to improve scientific literacy and organic chemistry electron arrow pushing
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Bachelor’s in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or other related field
Must be enrolled in university during the internship period
Successful completion of Organic Chemistry I and II courses
