    Overview:

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

This project will allow for the intern to work on state-of-the-art mass spectrometers and innovative techniques in the Drug Metabolism and Disposition group at AbbVie (in Quantitative, Translational, and ADME Sciences, formally DMPK).

The intern will apply separation techniques (i.e., ion mobility) and alternative fragmentation modes to resolve and identify closely related compounds of interest. The goal is to provide methodologies for both superior separation and compound characterization . The technologies to be explored (ion mobility and alternative fragmentation) are currently underutilized and are an untapped opportunity.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Determine the resolving power and instrumentation needed to perform the ion mobility experiments
    • Evaluate the utility of ion mobility to separate closely related metabolites on in-house platforms; determine potential time savings compared to traditional LC-MS separations
    • Evaluate utility of noncanonical fragmentation techniques (e.g., ultraviolet photodissociation, electron transfer dissociation, electron capture dissociation, electron activation dissociation) for metabolites on in-house platforms
    • Incorporate technologies into LC-MS/MS workflows with complex samples from animal/human matrices
    • Present findings to department and present at conference and/or draft manuscript for publication

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, or related field
    • Must be enrolled in university during the internship period
    • Expected graduation date between December 2024 - December 2025
    • Experience in liquid chromatography separations and analysis by mass spectrometry
    • Track record of performing independent scientific research
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications (Optional)

    • Exposure to noncanonical MS/MS fragmentation technologies (e.g., UVPD, ETD, ECD, EAD)
    • Exposure to ion mobility technologies (e.g., TWIMS, DTIMS, TIMS, FAIMS)
    • At least one co-authored publication in peer reviewed journal
    • Presentation at scientific conference (e.g., ASMS)

    Benefits and Amenities

    • Competitive pay
    • Travel, transportation, and lodging support for eligible students
