    Job Description

Molecular Toxicology Internship (Focusing on Mitochondrial toxicity) Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

The Investigative Molecular Toxicology group is within the Global Preclinical Safety Sciences department and functions to apply standard and novel models (in vitro and in vivo) and technologies to predict and/or mechanistically understand safety issues with different therapeutic modalities covering all therapeutic indications within Abbvie. The group has highly experienced scientists from multidisciplinary backgrounds (molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, veterinary medicine, toxicology, pathology) and is lead by industry leaders in preclinical safety research.

The Molecular Toxicology Intern will gain exposure to a wide range of pre-clinical assays and methods scientists use in predicting and understanding potential safety/toxicity related issues and interpretation of this data considering other relevant information from related groups in preclinical discovery and development sciences. Specifically, the intern will develop a deeper understanding about mitochondrial toxicity and help the team evaluate models/tools to improve current approaches to potentially predict this toxicity in early stages of drug development.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Review available scientific literature on current approaches (focusing on invitro assays) for mitochondrial toxicity and data interpretation.
    • Work with Molecular toxicology team to curate and summarize externally published data for different assays for reference mito-toxicants.
    • Contribute to experimental design and conduct of wet lab experiments to test selected compounds in battery of mitochondrial toxicity assays.
    • Summarize/analyze data and present in internal and external (if opportunity) meetings.
    • Collaborate with bioinformatics team to compile and visualize the data. If opportunity arises, also contribute for data curation and integration of internal transcriptomics/cell painting data related to mitochondrial toxicants.
