2024 Preclinical Drug Delivery Molecular Profiling and Drug Delivery Internship Overview
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Experiential Interns.
The Molecular Profiling and Drug Delivery (MPDD) group sits within the Small Molecule CMC organization. MPDD is accountable for a broad range of deliverables across various stages of drug discovery and development. During lead optimization and through candidate selection, MPDD scientists utilize state of the art automation and computational tools supported by expertise in biopharmaceutics, drug delivery, and solid-state chemistry to collaboratively progress candidates with higher probability of success into development and advise clinical formulation strategy.
Under supervision of MPDD scientists, the intern will advance our drug delivery capabilities at the discovery-development interface, with a focus on beyond-rule-of-five molecules (bRo5), such as degraders. Specifically, the intern will be responsible for assessing preclinical formulation vehicles, such as lipids, to optimize in vivo exposures of bRo5 molecules via various routes of administration. The intern will be responsible for conducting in-vitro experiments to establish preclinical formulation platform(s) to complement existing formulation strategies.
Key responsibilities include:
• Perform thorough literature analysis to identify formulation compositions of interest.
• Develop hypothesis-driven experimental plans to screen formulations efficiently.
• Independently execute in vitro experiments to characterize and select optimal formulations.
Minimum Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Chemical/Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, or other related field.
• Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
• Demonstrated leadership skills (i.e. extracurricular activities or projects.)
Preferred Qualifications
• Expected graduation date between December 2024 - July 2025.
• Fundamental knowledge of physicochemical properties, biopharmaceutical properties, and pharmacokinetics as they relate to drug delivery and formulation design.
• Proficient in basic l aboratory skills including pipetting, solution preparation, and dilution.
• Experience in HPLC/UPLC operation.
• Ability to troubleshoot experiments and identify/solve problems in experimental designs, including laboratory experimentation.
• Ability to apply research findings and interpret/analyze results; develop and implement a logical and strategic plan of action.
• Ability to thrive in a high-performance culture with excellent time management, decision-making, and organizational skills.
• Proficient in required software including Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
• Excellent oral/written communication skills with strong attention to detail.
Benefits and Amenities
• Competitive pay.
• Relocation support for eligible students.
• Opportunity to connect with AbbVie leaders and scientists.
