    2024 Safety Pharmacology Intern Overview

    Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

    The Safety Pharmacology group provides in vitro and in vivo data regarding the effects of molecules on the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Intravenous (IV) administration of poorly water-soluble small molecule therapeutics can lead to precipitation during mixing with blood, a concern for programs developing medicines for intravenous indications and limiting characterization of pharmacological and safety endpoints in preclinical models. The dynamic precipitation processes that take place during in vivo administration are currently unpredictable with established technology. We developed the Optical Spatial PREcipitation analYzer (OSPREY) as a breakthrough technology to quantify the amount and size of compound precipitates in whole blood using a flow-through system that models IV administration .

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Intradisciplinary collaboration with multiple departments at AbbVie (engineering, pharmaceutics, toxicology, safety pharmacology).
    • Design, execute and analyze experiments using the Osprey instrument.
    • Provide updates, both written and oral, to multiple departments.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in a technical field.
    • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
    • Must have wet lab experience.
    • Strong problem-solving skills including critical and analytical thinking.
    • Must be able to clearly communicate ideas and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Must be familiar with biology and chemistry.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Expected graduation date between December 2024 - July 2025.
