    Science & Technology (S&T) - Pharmaceutical & Parenteral Products Overview

    Science and Technology (S&T) is the intersection of technical excellence and business impact. We are champions of product innovation and process knowledge to solve AbbVie's most complex technical challenges to successfully commercialize our pipeline and maintain uninterrupted supply for our patients.

    S&T Pharmaceutical & Parenteral Products intern will be focused on work in a lab setting with targeted research. Possible intern assignments are in the following departments areas:

    • Analytical Development: Responsible for the development of analytical methods and performing extended characterization of proteins. Develop innovative methods using transmission Raman spectroscopy and advanced mass spectroscopy. Mass spectroscopy development focuses on using LC-MS, LC-FLR-MS and DESI-MS. Perform hands-on experiments for routine method testing in a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) setting.

    • API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient): Responsible for scale-up and validation of manufacturing process for new product . Develop methodology, perform scale-up experiments for application to commercial manufacturing processes focused on photochemical reactions.

    • PEC ( Parenteral and Eyecare): Supporting parenteral and eyecare drug products. Study biological drug stability using forced denaturation temperature conditions to provide data for a risk-based rapid assessment process for urgent changes

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity in research and development activities
    • Applying theoretical framework to solving problems within scientific discipline in a timely manner
    • Developing and executing lab work, drawing conclusions, deviations, and methodology
    • Summarizing and presenting results, providing conclusions and recommendations for path forward
    • Performing routine and complex tasks competently and independently to generate reliable and consistent results
    • Maintaining compliance with all applicable policies and procedures
    • Understanding and adhering to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials and GxP compliance, where applicable

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in a graduate university program, pursuing a PhD or Masters in Organic Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biology, or relative field
    • Must be returning to university the semester following internship
    • Previous research/lab experience

    Preferred Qualifications (Optional)

    • Expected graduation date between December 2024 - August 2025
    • Previous experience with analytical equipment, MS/LC, methodology, total synthesis for Analytical Development
    • Experience with photochemistry and/or organometallic chemistry for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient
    • Basic knowledge of proteins for Parenteral and Eyecare
    • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills required. Ability to communicate concepts and problems in terms that are understandable to all levels of the organization, including senior leadership
