    2024 Overview

Interns will be immersed in AbbVie’s in-house patent prosecution, litigation and clinical R&D legal team learning about, and handling, real-world matters in close coordination with AbbVie attorneys.

    Patent Legal Academy:

Interns will have substantive exposure to a variety of prosecution and litigation-related tasks under the supervision of AbbVie attorneys, which may include drafting patent applications and materials for U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, listing patents in the FDA’s Orange Book, analyzing freedom-to operate issues, drafting or editing contracts, evaluating issues related to biopharmaceutical patent litigation, observing litigation events such as hearings or depositions, and participating in strategy meetings with in-house and outside counsel. Interns will also receive support to help prepare them for the patent bar examination before the USPTO.

    Clinical R&D Legal Academy:

The intern will have substantive exposure to a variety of tasks under the supervision of AbbVie attorneys, which may include drafting, reviewing, editing and interpreting contracts, listing a patent in the FDA’s Orange Book, researching and evaluating legal, contractual and ethical issues related to clinical trials and the clinical development of new drugs, and participating in strategy meetings. All interns will research and present on a legal issue related to their work. Interns will have the opportunity to meet and work with AbbVie’s in-house and outside counsel, including partnering closely with a mentor attorney who will provide ongoing guidance and professional development. Interns will also be encouraged to provide their valuable input on initiatives aimed at enhancing diversity of opinions and experiences in the legal profession as a whole.
