    Position Summary

    Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States affecting 5.7 million people. Myocardial infarction (MI) and subsequent heart failure are still the leading cause of death worldwide accounting for more than 7 million deaths annually. Human fibrotic diseases also constitute a major health problem worldwide.  Fibrosis, defined as excessive connective tissue deposition, is commonly associated with high morbidity and mortality. The demand for innovative pharmacotherapies to address those unmet medical needs remains high. The Cardiovascular and Fibrosis Discovery biology group at BMS seeks to identify and develop effective therapies for these serious, untreatable, and often fatal conditions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • The summer intern(s) will work with a mentor to perform in vitro and/or in vivo experiments in one of our many discovery programs within CV Fibrosis.   The internship will provide the student an opportunity to gain educational and technical experience with common pharmacological and analytical methods such as cell culture, immunomagnetic cell isolation, tissue digestion, nucleic acid isolation, RT-qPCR, histology, multiplex protein analysis and flow cytometry. They will also gain experience working as part of a research team and provide an experience that will be helpful in future decisions regarding career path and areas of interest. 

    • Closely collaborate with scientists within department and with external partners.

    • Analyze experimental data and formally present summary of research project to CV/Fibrosis Department at the conclusion of the program

    • Maintain documentation of experiments in an electronic lab notebook

    • Work with program scientists to understand experimental design and execution

    • Learn and perform laboratory techniques required for project completion

    Qualifications & Experience

    • The candidate(s) will be a student enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate program in biology, biochemistry, cell or molecular biology. 

    • Lab experience is preferred.

    • Ideal candidate has some experience in cell culture, pipetting, centrifugation etc.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    • Customer-oriented attitude toward scientific colleagues.
