    Position Summary

    Human fibrotic diseases constitute a major health problem worldwide.  Fibrosis, defined as excessive connective tissue deposition, is commonly associated with high morbidity and mortality. The demand for innovative pharmacotherapies to address those unmet medical needs remains high. In addition to fibrosis, heart failure (HF) is a clear leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States affecting 5.7 million people. Myocardial infarction (MI) and subsequent heart failure are still the leading cause of death worldwide accounting for more than 7 million deaths annually. The Cardiovascular and Fibrosis Discovery biology group at BMS seeks to identify and develop effective therapies for these serious, untreatable, and often fatal conditions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • The summer intern(s) will work closely with a mentor to perform in vitro experiments on one or of our discovery programs within CV Fibrosis.   The internship will provide the student a unique opportunity to gain experience in applying in vitro pharmacological methods and principles to drug discovery. The research project be aimed at identifying and characterizing the mechanism of action of drug candidates, as well as increasing our understanding of underlying mechanisms of the disease.

    • They will also have the opportunity to work in a research team with defined goals toward drug development and provide an experience that will be helpful to mold career path and scientific research aspirations.

    • Additional experiences include, but not limited to:

      • Closely collaborate with experienced scientists within the department and external partners in experimental design, execution, data analysis and interpretation

      • Analyze experimental data and formally present summary of research project to CV/Fibrosis Department at the conclusion of the program (opportunity to sharpen presentation skills)

      • Maintain industry-standard methods of documentation of experiments in an electronic lab notebook

      • Learn and perform laboratory techniques (new assays) required for project completion

    Qualifications & Experience

    • The candidate(s) will be a student enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate program in biology, physiology, biochemistry, cell or molecular biology. 

    • Lab experience is preferred.

    • Ideal candidate has some experience in cell culture, pipetting, centrifugation etc.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    • Customer-oriented attitude toward scientific colleagues.
