    BMS encompasses a broad range of disciplines to enable a robust pipeline of drug candidates aimed at serious diseases. Chemistry is a core capability in Small Molecule & Drug Discovery (SMDD) with innovative scientists working in medicinal chemistry, radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, and large-scale synthesis. Within SMDD our Lead Discovery and Optimization (LDO) team is responsible for high throughput screening, compound storage and distribution, primary assays to support discovery programs, and compound profiling to explore drug liabilities in vitro. LDO scientists discover and adopt cutting edge assay technologies that utilize state-of-the-art automation to drive speed and efficiency. Our Molecular Structure and Design team embraces novel approaches to computer-aided drug design, machine learning, and structural biology. The integration of these disciplines provides a seamless and highly interactive environment for discovery scientists to learn, develop, and innovate. Working in partnership with our disease area experts in the Thematic Research Centers provides an exciting pathway to discover and deliver medicines to patients in need.

    We are seeking a highly motivated drug discovery data scientist to join our Data Science and Advanced Analytics team in LDO. Our team is responsible for developing informative analysis tools and inferential models for machine learning (ML)-enhanced lead discovery. We are passionate about integrating ML with target-based and phenotypic screens to drive discovery of the next generation of novel medicines. Our team works collaboratively with bench scientists and data scientists across the research organization to address key scientific questions driven by project needs.     Responsibilities

    • Formulate hypotheses to address key scientific questions, develop ML and analytics tools to address at scale, and integrate to enable ML-enhanced drug discovery
    • Champion the evaluation and implementation of next generation ML and analytics tools
    • Utilize necessary tools to extract and prepare datasets for downstream consumption in models and analytics
    • Write and document programming code in one or more languages (Python preferred) to facilitate data preparation / cleaning, model development, evaluation, and deployment
    • Create deployable tools to enable customer interaction with datasets and models
    • Collaborate across R&D data science teams to develop enterprise strategies for machine learning in drug discovery
    • Present analyses and results to technical and non-technical audiences
    • Represent LDO in machine learning and data science forums

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of academic / industry experience, or
    • Master’s Degree with 3+ years of academic / industry experience, or
    • Recent Ph.D.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ph.D. with 0-2+ years of experience in a relevant field with a focus in machine learning and drug discovery. Postdoctoral or industry experience a plus.
    • Expert knowledge of one or more scripting programming languages, preferably Python, with a focus on machine learning
    • Ability to extract information from databases using a variety of software packages (e.g., Oracle SQL developer)
    • Ability to build and maintain databases aligned with enterprise solutions is desirable but not required
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to understand technical business problems and implement solutions
    • Ability to work effectively on matrixed teams to collaboratively solve challenging problems, while also able to work independently with minimal resources
    • Good interpersonal, communication, writing and organizational skills
    • Ability to summarize technically/analytically complex information for a non-technical audience
