    Position Summary

A mass spectrometry-based metabolomics intern is wanted in the Process Development Analytics (PDA) department at the Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) Biologics Center of Excellence in Devens, MA. The successful candidate will develop and validate a mass spectrometry-based metabolomics method for the identification and quantitation of metabolites associated with glycometabolism and glycoprotein fucosylation in mammalian cells used in the production of novel biotherapeutics. During the 4-month period, the candidate will participate fully in experimental design, sample preparation, instrument operation and analysis, as well as data analysis. The candidate will be fully integrated in the mass spectrometry analytical team in PDA and will work closely with upstream process development scientists as well as other teams within PDA. A strong academic background together with demonstrated interest in biopharmaceutical analytical technology will be important for a successful application.

Internship dates: June - October 2022

    Key Responsibilities:

    • The candidate will review relevant literature to understand the scope of the study and develop an appropriate experimental design for the execution of the project.
    • LC-MS/MS method development for the quantitative analysis of metabolites associated with fucosylation using standards.
    • Sample preparation, mass spec instrument operation and analysis, as well as metabolomics data analysis and interpretation.
    • The candidate will work closely with upstream process development scientists as well as other teams within PDA with supervision.

    Qualifications & Experience:

    • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical chemistry, or a related discipline
    • Experience with liquid chromatography separation techniques including, but not limited to, reverse-phase, size exclusion, ion exchange, and hydrophilic interaction chromatography.
    • Ability to operate and maintain mass spectrometry instruments (time-of-flight, orbitrap) for analysis involving intact mass analysis, peptide mapping, and glycan analysis of biotherapeutics using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.
    • Proficiency in mass spectrometry-based proteomics, peptide mapping, and/or metabolomics data analysis is required.
    • Ability to understand and apply advanced scientific principles, theories, concepts, and practices to process and analytical development, strong collaborator, and team player with excellent oral and written communication skills to help with presenting data internally.
