    Discovery Co-Op Program Overview

AbbVie is investing heavily in a new research enterprise - the Foundational Neuroscience Center (FNC). The FNC is investigating the fundamental biological mechanisms focused on Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease to discover and develop disease-modifying therapeutics for these devastating diseases.

The Discovery Co-Op will have the opportunity to work within a collaborative team supporting one of the below projects:

    Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease Histology :

    • Work closely with pharmacology scientists to execute experiments to assess the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases in animal models using histological and immunohistochemical methods.
    • Help design, perform, and analyze in vivo experiments in rodent brains using histological endpoints.
    • Learn to run automated immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization equipment and conduct image analysis on brain sections from studies aimed at assessing efficacy of novel treatments in rodent models of Parkinson's disease.
    • Learn in vivo techniques (rodent handling, dosing, tissue collection, etc.) as well as biochemical endpoints (ELISA) if interested.

    Alzheimer’s Disease Glial Biology:

    • Help verify protein and mRNA expression in microglial cell lines.
    • Support the generation of knockout cell lines using CRISPR/Cas9.
    • Perform assay development to characterize tool compounds/antibodies, and functional assays that test the effect of target manipulation on microglial function and phenotype.

    Parkinson’s Disease Biology:

    • Work with cell lines, primary cells, or iPSCs.
    • Learn and support fluorescence imaging including immunocytochemistry.
    • Perform molecular biology techniques including transfection, RNAi, and qPCR.
    • Perform immuno- and biochemical assays including protein quantitation methods, Western blot, and ELISAs.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in a 5-year Co-Op school, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell/Molecular Biology, Immunology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or related field.
    • Must be enrolled in university during the Co-Op period.
    • Expected graduation date between July 2024 - December 2026.
    • Highly motivated and detail oriented with strong communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Immunohistochemistry, histology molecular/system neuroscience, and/or microscopy exposure/interest.
    • Strong background in cell biology, neuroscience and/or neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.
    • Experience with stem cells, primary cultures, and cell lines.
    • Microscopy skills, including immunofluorescence and live cell imaging.
    • Experience with biochemical assays such as protein extraction, ELISA, and Western blot.
    • Experience with molecular biology approaches such as transfection, RNAi, and qPCR.
    • Experience with tissue sectioning - frozen or paraffin.
    • Experience with paraffin processing/embedding.
    • Experience with neuroanatomy, biochemistry, and/or animal handling.
    • Comfortable with PowerPoint, Word, and Excel .

    Benefits and Amenities

    • Competitive pay.
    • Travel and lodging support for eligible students.

    Equal Employment Opportunity
