    Scientist, Compound Management, Leads Discovery and Optimization

    BMS encompasses a broad range of disciplines to enable a robust pipeline of drug candidates aimed at serious diseases. Chemistry is a core capability in Small Molecule & Drug Discovery with innovative scientists working in medicinal chemistry, radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, and large-scale synthesis. Within SMDD our Lead Discovery and Optimization (LDO) team is responsible for high throughput screening, compound storage and distribution, primary assays to support discovery programs, and compound profiling to explore drug liabilities in vitro. LDO scientists discover and adopt cutting edge assay technologies that utilize state-of-the-art automation to drive speed and efficiency. Our Molecular Structure and Design team embraces novel approaches to computer-aided drug design, machine learning, and structural biology. The integration of these disciplines provides a seamless and highly interactive environment for discovery scientists to learn, develop, and innovate. Working in partnership with our disease area experts in the Thematic Research Centers provides an exciting pathway to discover and deliver medicines to patients in need.

    Leads Discovery and Optimization (LDO) is a dynamic organization that supports the entire continuum of drug discovery from lead identification to clinical candidate delivery at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS). LDO leverages state of the art technologies, complemented by deep subject matter expertise and broad scientific knowledge, to deliver innovative and comprehensive preclinical in vitro datasets to support our drug discovery pipeline in disease areas such as oncology, immunology, fibrosis, cardiovascular diseases, and cell therapy.

    We are seeking for a Scientist to join the Compound Management (CM) group within LDO to support our San Diego research site. The CM group stores and secures BMS small molecule compound collections and maintains sample integrity while efficiently distributing compounds on demand locally and across BMS and external research sites for testing in high-throughput screening and profiling assays. Sample handling and plating automation are integrated with compound ordering and inventory management software.

    Responsibilities

    • Support day-to-day compound handling process including fulfillment of sample requests in dry and solution in variety of formats
    • Utilize automated stores, liquid handling systems, and robotic platforms to perform daily plating
    • Utilize LIMS to conduct queries and other compound database requests
    • Support high-throughput screening and lead profiling efforts
    • Coordinate with vendors for instrument troubleshooting and routine maintenance
    • Assist other lab members with routine CM operations and logistics
    • Collaborate with other CM labs across sites to coordinate compound receipt and delivery
    • Direct users to the proper location and resources to request compounds and provide assistance as needed
    • Adhere to EHS standards for laboratory safety, including proper use of personal protective equipment and proper operation of safety enclosures and other equipment

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of academic / industry experience or
    • Master’s degree with 3+ years of academic / industry experience or
    • PhD, no experience required

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • BS in chemistry, biological science, or equivalent field with 5-7 years of experience working within Compound Management or related field
    • Demonstrated record of competency working in a chemistry or biology laboratory, high throughput screening or compound management
    • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to be flexible to help support various needs of BMS teams
    • Familiarity with chemical or biological information systems, database querying and or data analysis preferred
    • Familiarity with Titian Mosaic is a plus
    • Familiarity with Tecan EVO, Hamilton Vantage, or Echo acoustic dispenser
    • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
    • Strong oral and written communication skills

    For California Sites - The starting compensation for this job is a range from $97,000 - $135,300 , plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
