    Job Description

    R&D Tech carries out daily activities in the vivarium and will need to be proficient in humane rodent and dog handling skills, dosing by oral gavage, intravenous, and intraperitoneal routes, bleeding from the tail vein, assessing health, and performing humane euthanasia. The ideal candidate will also have postmortem examination (necropsy) experience. There are opportunities for expanding the candidate’s responsibilities beyond those identified as core job responsibilities. At all times, the candidate must adhere to the highest standards of animal welfare and personal conduct consistent with Abbvie values.

    The candidate will also be required to utilize a computer system to record all activities and observations. Ability to design, plan, organize and implement tasks within an allotted timeframe. Basic competence of Excel Spreadsheets, word processing, and email and knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems. The candidate will be required to work with potentially hazardous compounds, using appropriate precautions for the safety of the candidate and co-workers, and to prepare dosing formulations.

    Must be able to concisely communicate key issues to stakeholders, interact and communicate effectively with peers, animal husbandry staff, veterinary staff, toxicologists, and collaborating scientists.

    Once the training period is completed, the candidate will be required to work independently on weekend days on an as needed basis (typically 1 weekend per month)

    Ideal candidate would have histology experience or the willingness to learn.

    Responsibilities:

    • Works under minimal direction of supervisor or technical lead on assignments.
    • Provide technical service for systems as assigned: repair, troubleshooting, and daily monitoring for potential issues and/or improvements.
    • Identify and evaluate problematic issues and help implement and communicate solutions.
    • Assist operations in the process of troubleshooting to determine potential impacts on production and facility systems.
    • Assist in gathering system information and specifications for production, engineering groups and outside consultants, contractors, and various departments within the company.
    • Participate and/or assist engineers in the design of process equipment or systems for optimal performance. Assist in the start-up of new and troubleshoot existing facilities/equipment to ensure optimal operation and performance.
    • Makes recommendations to improve processes, equipment or work processes and works with vendors and engineering to identify new equipment or technologies which may be beneficial or increase efficiency.
    • Oversee and coordinate maintenance, internal and external resources, and project related activities with the daily production schedule to ensure on-time completion.
    • Makes required field inspections for job site conditions including operability, maintainability, safety, environmental and quality issues.

    Qualifications

    • High School/GED is required AND at least 5 years prior technical experience in area(s) of specialty
    • Technical training completion/certification or associates degree may substitute for up to 2 years of required experience.
    • Knowledge of basic regulatory requirements.
    • Communication Skills – Ability to concisely communicate key issues to stakeholders
    • Analytical Skills – Ability to assess issues that arise, seek multiple perspectives, gather more information as needed, and identify key issues that need to be addressed.
    • Computer Literacy – Basic competence of spreadsheets, word processing, and email and knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems and purchasing systems.
    • Planning – Ability to design, plan, organize and implement tasks within an allotted timeframe.

    • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
