  • Responsibilities

    NWC+ is not your traditional school. We don’t have a school bell, scheduled class periods, our students are free to make their own schedule, our Mentor Teachers choose when they will teach and meet with students. We find students jobs and internships, we set them up with career and technical training in over 60 different fields, and we give every student a new Chromebook to see them through high school. We’re trying something new & exciting and were looking for the right people to help see our mission into fruition.

    NWC+ is a new program within New West Charter High School opening next school year with a small student body of 50 students (25 freshmen, 25 sophomores). Our Hybrid Learning model has students completing 80% of their work independently and 20% at our school site in “Seminars” for each core subject. Students are free to come and work on campus in The Lounge where subject specific experts are on hand each day to offer assistance on assignments or answer questions. Starting their Junior year, students can begin taking classes at Santa Monica College within their Career & Technical Education department. Students will be able to choose from over 60 careers and earn a Departmental Certificate upon graduating from high school. NWC+ is also building a network of business partners that will place our students in internships or even paid positions during and after high school.

    All students are assigned to a Mentor Teacher who oversees them and 15 other students via Accelerate Education and their Learning Management Software. Teachers are expected to meet with all their students at least twice a month for 45 minute sessions. In addition to managing a student caseload, all Mentor Teachers teach seminars within their subject area several times a week. Seminars are meant to be engaging simulations, debates, experiments, anything to connect what they’ve learned online to real life.

    Reporting Responsibilities: Reports directly to the Director of Development   Performance Objectives:

    • Connects with individual students quickly and is able to establish a personal and meaningful relationship. Mentor Teachers must be able to develop a relationship built on understanding, trust, mutual respect. We are looking for people that truly care about their students beyond the school day.

    • Able to correctly identify strengths and weakness in students using a variety of means. Mentor teachers must be able to use data and other indicators to identify patterns of achievement or challenges. Mentor teachers would then work with students to develop and implement successful strategies to enhance their learning.

    • Effectively communicates and works productively with wide range of people for the success of their students. A student’s team may consist of the school Director, Special Education, Parent, Lawyers. Specialists, etc. all working together for the benefit of the student.

    • Successfully manages many tasks at once. At times a Mentor Teacher is supervising 15 students in 6 different subjects each, monitoring their engagement time, checking the quality of their work, grading/entering assignments, helping out in The Lounge, preparing and teaching seminars classes. Applicants must be able to oversee many aspects of the position with great attention to detail and a willingness to go above and beyond in all aspects of the position.

    • Provides engaging and challenging instruction to all students. A great Mentor Teacher is able to use a variety of instructional and assessment styles to ensure that students are not only engaged with the curriculum, but are also held responsible for their learning. A Mentor Teacher is able to differentiate the materials to match their student’s abilities and interests.

    Responsible to implement and follow all school policies and procedures, including but not limited to the following:   Curriculum, Instructional, and Additional Employee Duties

    • Creates a variety of engaging lessons, activities, and assessments for assigned seminar classes
    • Be able to explain school and state graduation requirements to students/parents
    • Provides parents and students information about Accelerate Education and the resources that we offer students
    • Works with students to differentiate instruction and uses a variety of strategies to ensure student achievement
    • Has a drive to develop, revise, and implement new curriculum for school-wide use
    • Plans, implements and coordinates instructional goals, activities, and lessons with students
    • Works with each student to prepare Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs)
    • Meets with students at least twice a month for 45 minutes to evaluate student progress, review/adjust ILPs, ask questions, check work, review transcripts, and discuss progress towards graduation and post-high school goals
    • Reviews, grades, and enters student scores in a timely fashion
    • Regularly maintains their electronic grade book for accuracy and updates at least once a week
    • Communicates (either through email or phone) in a timely manner with all school stakeholders including: important school dates, concerns or congratulations, standardized test dates, assignment deadlines to students/parents, answers to student/parent questions, Notice of Missed Assignments, etc.
    • Maintains contact log information and documentation for every student/parent meeting
    • Submits work samples and attendance records to the office within timelines established
    • Maintains all required records in an organized, efficient, and professional manner
    • Initiates the SST process when significant areas of concern warrant doing so
    • Attends SST, 504 and IEP meetings and documents students’ present levels of performance

    Training, Education, and Experience

    • A valid California single subject teaching credential within the content areas of English, Social Science, Science, Mathematics. Candidates with dual credentials are highly sought & encouraged to apply.
    • Must have knowledge of standards based curriculum, behavior management techniques, record keeping, student assessment, planning for individual student learning needs, and child development
    • Understands the overall dynamics of the program including school procedures, paperwork and legal requirements and compliance, and scope of curriculum resources.
