    The ARABIC (MSA) INSTRUCTOR OF LANGUAGE AND CULTURE will assist in the development of curricula and instruct military and United States government agency personnel in intensive language and culture courses delivered in person and over video-teleconferencing (VTC) venues.  The duration of each course ranges from one day to one year. While classes are in session 5-6 hours of teaching per day is common per instructor, while 2-3 hours per day are used for lesson preparation, classroom management, administration and supplementary curricula development.  When courses are not in session course materials are developed by the language instructors for publishing and for in-class use.  The language instructor is responsible for 5-6 hours of in class teaching daily and providing assistance to the Lead Instructor in the design of course curricula and syllabi. 

    The instructor must be fluent in Arabic (MSA) language and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English. The instructor is required to take an Oral Proficiency Interview and score superior in Arabic (MSA) and advanced in English prior to selection.  

    The Arabic (MSA) Instructor of Language and Culture will teach not only the language, but also teach cultural and regional studies courses in the target language or in English. Topics may include but are not limited to the geography, history, literature, natural resources, economy, government, ethnicities, etc. of Arabic-speaking countries.

    The instructor must have a high level of knowledge in current teaching methodologies and be comfortable with teaching through technology using Video-Teleconferencing (VTCs), Smartboards, and iPads.  Instructors must also be able to work productively in a group (team teaching, active coordination, extensive collaboration), and also work effectively in an independent mode.  The instructor must be able to create and follow syllabi without oversight.

     

    Specific DUTIES for this position include:

    • The Arabic (MSA) Language and Culture Instructor will teach from 5-6 hours per day and assist the Lead Instructor with completion of the following tasks:

      • Assume duties and responsibilities of the Lead Instructor as required.
      • Assist Lead Instructor in the development of course syllabi and curricula prior to class start dates, and based on the needs of the program and as required by the DoD.
      • Assist Lead Instructor in maintaining updated syllabi and course curricula that meets DCLCP and customer requirements.
      • Assist the Lead Instructor with division of the course curricula into weekly curricula and provide copies to students.
      • Assist Lead Instructor in the distribution of course materials to students in a timely fashion.
      • Assist the Lead instructor in incorporating culture and regional studies coursework into curricula.
      • Assist Lead Instructor to evaluate the effectiveness of the curricula to ensure DCLCP and the students’ expectations are being met.
      • Attend weekly meetings facilitated by the Language Department Lead Instructor. Also, attend DCLCP weekly and other meetings as needed.
      • Support effective communication and collaboration within the department.
      • Review weekly lesson plans and curricula to make sure the requirements of the team-teaching pedagogy are being met.
      • Review student’s weekly grades and performance; emplace pedagogic intervention for students who are not meeting expectations.
      • Collaborate with the Language Department Lead Instructor and Manager of Academic Programs on course accreditation submission requirements.
      • Assist the Lead Instructor with completing student progress reports and conduct bi-weekly counseling for each student.
      • Communicate with the Lead Instructor regarding the department’s administrative and academic issues in support of achieving department goals and objectives.
      • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance; maintain other records and data according to program needs or accreditation requirements.

     

    Due to instruction being conducted at multiple training sites, some travel may be required for instructors.

     

    The position may be located at Fort Bragg NC, or other location dependent upon mission requirements or at the request of our customers or as determined by the Director of the DCLCP.

     

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

    • Master’s Degree (language and/or literature), linguistics (applied linguistics is preferred), History, Anthropology, or any related field
    • Must have experience in instructing Arabic (MSA) language and culture.
    • Must have experience in curriculum development for Arabic (MSA) language materials.
    • Applicant must score advanced in English as tested against the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI); required to take the OPI before selection and must score superior in Arabic (MSA).
    • Individual must be able to pass a Criminal Background Investigation. 
    • Must have knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices in the classroom and experience utilizing advanced classroom technologies.
    • Must be able to work productively within a team and independently.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

    • Ph.D. in relevant field
    • Experience in intensive language instruction, particularly in a military or government setting.

     

    ABOUT THE DEFENSE CRITICAL LANGUAGE/CULTURE PROGRAM (DCLCP) AT THE MANSFIELD CENTER

    The Defense Critical Language/Culture Program (DCLCP) at the Mansfield Center develops and presents comprehensive language and regional studies/cultural awareness courses, courseware, and supporting materials designed to prepare DOD and USG employees for overseas deployment.  These courses and materials will be specifically designed to meet DoD requirements, and may include, but not be limited to, languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Dari, Persian, Indonesian, French, Russian, Pashto, and Korean.  Additionally, these courses and materials will include a substantial regional and cultural studies component.  DCLCP will also develop synchronous online learning modules and Apple Apps for language and culture instruction in coordination with Department of Defense (DoD) entities.
