    POSITION DETAILS

    Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with The National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) is seeking qualified candidate(s) for an Architectural Conservation Internship to support on-going and upcoming projects at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) and the Soldiers and Airmen Home National Cemetery (SAHNC). 

     

    This is a full-time six-month internship position.  No housing is provided as part of the internship.

     

    Successful candidate(s) will contribute to the preservation of various monuments and structures by assisting the Conservator and Cultural Resources Manager with a wide variety of projects.  ANC is our nation’s premier military cemetery and shrine, and it is a Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

     

     

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

    • Hands-on preservation and conservation of the primarily metal and masonry monuments, memorials, sculptures, and historic structures;
    • Archival work, including scanning and cataloguing of ANC files, and research into the history of objects and structures;
    • Physical field work involving tools and chemicals, some work at heights;
    • Field inspection, condition assessments, historic fabric investigation, field documentation by photography and written notes, assistance with on-going preservation, conservation, monitoring, documentation, and treatment projects;
    • Assisting with a range of office work, which may include filing, data entry, preparation of short reports, reviews of studies produced by others, and continuation of on-going research, documentation and treatment projects of historic structures.

     

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ability to pass a background check

    • Must provide own transportation in the greater DC-metro region

    • Prior experience with hand tools and power tools, possibly to include construction, maintenance, metalworking, or masonry field experience. Any experience with art making or handling, historic preservation or conservation treatments, is advantageous but not a requirement.

    • Applicant should be comfortable:

    • Using hand and power tools

    • Working outside

    • Standing for extended periods

    • Working at heights

    • Working with chemicals

    • Lifting 50 lbs. or less

    • Be hard-working, reliable and detail oriented

    • Be capable of working under direction on fragile and delicate items

    • Be able to follow instructions

    • Maintain a positive attitude

    • Adhere to site safety protocols at all times

     

     PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Please articulate these skills in your application; examples may be requested:

    • Actively pursuing a degree, or be a recent graduate, in materials conservation of outdoor monuments and sculptures, historic preservation, or architectural history.
    • Be currently enrolled in an academic program in a similar field, and possess relevant prior work experience;
    • Familiarity with historic architecture and landscapes, especially monumental architecture, funerary, and cemetery designs;
    • Prior experience with field conservation work, especially masonry and bronze;
    • Hands-on experience with field documentation and conditions assessment;
    • Familiar with historic construction methods and historic preservation philosophy, including the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works;
    • Familiarity with safety standards (e.g. OSHA); interns must adhere to site safety protocols at all times;
    • Work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and climbing. Work may occur at heights, such as work on ladders or scaffolding.  Should be capable of lifting moderately heavy objects (50 lbs. or less), such as equipment and supplies.  Applicant must be comfortable working with tools, with chemicals, working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, and occasional night work;
    • Ability to work well independently, and in a team environment that includes masons, engineers, planners, architects, environmental specialists, and facilities maintenance staff;
    • Solid research, technical writing, and communication skills;
    • Strong attention to detail when authoring and reviewing work;
    • Fluent with Microsoft Office.
