This role sits within our EMEA Construction and Design function and is responsible for implementing Digital Realty (DLR) Design & Engineering Guidelines/Standards for data centre design projects in the UK and Mainland Europe. You will provide strategic and innovative thinking regarding the design and engineering of the projects and manage challenging deliverables against project expectations (within budget and milestone objectives and deadlines set for each project).
IN THIS ROLE YOU'LL:
- Direct and oversee the day to day design activities of the various consultants, contractors and vendors; including leading the consultant team before construction, supporting the tender and procurement process and providing design lead during construction and commissioning.
- Apply DLR Design & Engineering Guidelines/Standards to all projects to ensure that standards are up-to-date with industry best practices and meet Company’s business objectives (emphasis on value-engineering and fast delivery).
- Lead the design for datacentre development projects alongside the Delivery Manager. This will include leading the consultant team before construction, support the tender and procurement process and provide design lead during construction and commissioning.
- Provide technical support to DLR leasing and sale activities.
- Assist in the preparation and review of budgets and forecasts related to anticipated design and construction expenditures.
- Develop and maintain consultant, contractor and vendor relationships to provide cost-effective services for DLR projects.
- Prepare requests for proposals including evaluating proposals and making recommendations to senior managers regarding vendor selection.
- Communicate status of projects to both internal and external stakeholders on an ad-hoc and formal basis. Support the preparation of monthly project reports regarding the budget, schedule and scope objectives of assigned projects.
- Monitor the Project Team in the performance of their design and engineering services.
- Monitor the distribution of design information between the Project Team and between the Project Team and third parties.
- Ensure all project scope and risk is managed through the approved change control and risk management process.
- Assume responsibility for handover of a full set of accurate as-built drawings, testing and commissioning records and Operating & Maintenance Manuals to the DLR operations team in a timely manner.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
- Extensive work experience in Mechanical Engineering, preferably up to degree level.
- Excellent understanding of mechanical and electrical data centre infrastructure in particular, chillers, cooling, ventilation and air handling units. Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction data centre industry.
- Demonstrable experience of working with and managing consultants for technically complex projects. Ability to direct and manage internal and external resources. You will need experience of successfully managing the design of data centre projects through all project stages.
- Ability to provide leadership to contractors and vendors across all design disciplines and through all project stages.
- Able to understand and interpret design drawings, construction drawings, construction specifications, design and construction contracts, project schedules, and detailed budgets and estimate summaries.
- Ability to focus on and deliver against key project milestones coupled with extensive experience and an in-depth understanding of design standards and codes. Experience of the legal, statutory and regulatory approvals required for the design, construction and operation of a data centre project in at least one of our geographies (UK, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and France).
- Knowledge of design and construction terms, principles and contracts.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Computer literate in the use of MS Office software.
- Excellent presentation and communications skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Fluency in English – ability to speak German, French or Dutch is advantageous but not essential.
- Financial acumen to recommend, review and analyze budgets and estimates.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Able to work both independently collaboratively with experience of cross functional working at all levels.
- Willingness to undertake regular travel across our data centre estate.
