    The RURAL INSTITUTE invites applications for an Accessible Technology & Media Design (ATMD) Specialist (Computer Support Specialist II) position. This position supports a variety of print, video and web-related technology, and graphic design needs of the Rural Institute faculty and staff. This includes designing, implementing and supporting traditional and interactive media such as documents, websites, videos, reports, brochures, presentations, and other media resources. The ATMD specialist serves as an “accessibility expert” to ensure that media and documents are developed in an accessible format meeting WC3 and Federal Section 508 standards. The ATMD specialist designs training materials, gives presentations, and provides technical assistance related to accessible technology and media development. The ATMD is expected to remain up to date on AT applications and devices, including their maintenance, update, and repair.

     

    The ATMD reports directly to the Rural Institute’s Public Communications, Education and Data Manager and is co-supervised by the MonTECH Program Director. Most tasks require a high level of communication with program and project leadership across the Rural Institute, including regular coordination with the Rural Institute IT Manager/Technology Director.

     

    Required Skills

    • Proficiency in the creative design of visual and audio materials.
    • Knowledge of Adobe design software and Microsoft Office.
    • Demonstrated experience in website creation and management using UM-approved development tools.
    • Experience in graphics design and manipulation using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
    • Proficiency in brochure and document creation using Microsoft Publisher, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator.
    • Knowledge of FTP, HTML, CSS, WC3 and section 508 regulations and their use and implementation.
    • Ability to determine if documents, websites, and other media platforms meet accessibility standards.
    • Ability to fix accessibility problems within websites, documents, and other media.
    • Ability to create alternative formats.
    • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and interpret the needs of individual projects.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
    • Ability and aptitude to quickly learn new technology, software and hardware as it relates to accessible media creation and management. Remain up to date on AT applications and devices.
    • Ability to maintain, update, troubleshoot, and repair assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
    • Ability to type, operate a computer, camera, and other computer-related equipment.

     

     

     

    Minimum Required Experience

    • Associate Degree (or equivalency) in Information Technology, Computer Applications, Graphic Design, or a related field; in addition to four (4) years of closely related experience; or any combination of experience and education that provides the competencies necessary to successfully discharge the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Expert knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premier, and Acrobat, and the Microsoft Office suite.
    • Expert knowledge of WC3 and section 508 standards and implementation in documents and other media.
    • Ability to evaluate websites and documents for accessibility, including screen reader access.
    • Video creation, editing, and captioning using digital video cameras, Camtasia, and Adobe Premier.
    • Proficiency in creating and maintaining a presence in various social media, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, RSS feeds, and YouTube.
    • Proficient understanding of webinar and video conferencing software, including Zoom.
    • Ability to occasionally prepare and deliver presentations and/or trainings on accessible document and media creation.
    • Knowledge of document and website conversion from non-accessible formats to accessible formats.
    • Knowledge of the classic ASP computer language and ESRI ArcGIS would be a plus.

    POSITION TITLE:                    Accessible Technology & Media Design (ATMD) Specialist (COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST II)

    WORK SCHEDULE:                 Part-time 0.875FTE (35 Hours a week), Monday through Friday, 12 months/year

    SALARY:                                $19.29/HR – Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department.

    PROBATIONARY PERIOD:        Six months minimum
