At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.
The Team
The Member Experience Client Foundations team (MXCF) is responsible for building the server-driven UI (SDUI) architecture and tooling used to power the member user experience across Netflix's iOS, Android, TV and Web client streaming applications.
The team is responsible for working closely with our server foundational partners on this SDUI architecture to ensure that we're building holistic solutions which balance client architectural considerations across all four client platforms, alongside our server partner's distributed system concerns .
Allowing us to deliver a flexible, scalable SDUI platform on which both our client & server product teams can deliver the innovative member experiences which Netflix sets the industry standard for.
MXCF is a foundational team. We don't build product experiences directly. We build architecture and tooling which empowers product engineers (our customers ), to build great product experiences, efficiently and reliably.
We're currently working to evolve our SDUI architecture's capabilities to support:
A flexible spectrum of server-driven rendering : From coarse-grained control through to fine grained UI control; or none at all, based on product needs.
Pushing UI updates to the client both for exceedingly high-scale needs (simultaneous concurrent updates for live events), as well user experience updates at lower scale.
Dynamically modify the UI in response to the user's session interaction and needs.
Efficiently support the increasingly wide variety of content types and business verticals (shows, movies, games, ads, live, acquisition) which Netflix supports.
The team has a well established mix of experienced and early career engineers , working across the iOS, Android and TV client platforms. All of them, regardless of years of experience, are mature engineers, passionate about living the Netflix culture, and pursuing the next big challenge.
The Role
We're looking for an Engineering Manager for MXCF.
The role requires managing complex partnerships with both client and server teams . Working with server partners as "one-team" delivering a holistic end-to-end SDUI platform. While being able to represent, and advocate strongly for client product and foundational UI engineering concerns. Helping forge SDUI vision, architecture and execution alignment across both.
Critical to the team's success is the ability to then guide, coach and support the engineers navigating this client-server balance. Empowering them to excel in collaborations across these broadly cross-functional customer and partner teams.
Being a foundational team, the role involves shaping a customer-empathetic team culture which grounds technical solutions in the value it unlocks for product experiences and product engineering. Balancing product engineering velocity needs, with steady state platform leverage.
It provides the unique opportunity to pivot between architectural, people and project execution leadership , influencing well beyond the team's boundaries, to deliver an SDUI platform which will power Netflix's ambitious member experience goals .
You
As a leader, you prefer to navigate ambiguity , own your judgment calls and work through complex partnership alignment , based on your close understanding of the team, the work they do, and its relationship to the business. Rather than having some distant leadership level make that call for you, or provide you with top-down prescriptive rules to do so.
As a coach, you enter each week excited about exploring ways to help your team deliver world class foundational solutions .
Whether through the people: Building diverse, inclusive teams. Challenging them with impactful opportunities . Creating space for perspectives which question the status quo . Giving them the autonomy to apply their engineering maturity , while ensuring their work aligns with business needs through clear communication and precise context . Being a mentor for career growth; sharing clear expectations and candid feedback , while being a partner in navigating challenges.
Or, through the technology: Building the foundational mindset within which the team can operate. Starting with technology choices being a means to an end ; the ultimate goal being to empower product engineers and unlock business value. Understanding that there are no technology absolutes , and it's all about the trade-offs we choose to prioritize. Finding the right mix of tech-debt adoption and paved road investment to balance velocity with leverage. Building innovative technology solutions is just the start. Driving adoption, planning for migration , and making sure the solution delivers value for customer teams is your definition of "done" .
What Sets You Apart
3+ years of experience leading a foundational client team, building solutions for other engineers.
Experience with client UI architecture & workflows on at least one platform (Mobile, Web, TV).
Have wins, and losses, from leading complex cross-functional architecture initiatives .
Able to efficiently drive alignment with customer & partner teams on one-off velocity vs. paved road leverage trade-offs.
Have the curiosity and courage to explore uncharted waters .
Colleagues appreciate the additive perspectives & balanced views you bring to collaborations, while not shying away from taking strong positions when needed.
Have a talent in distilling complex, ambiguous positions or scenarios down to succinct principles .
Are committed to the value different perspectives bring to a team and invest in an inclusive culture that enables colleagues of all backgrounds to thrive.
Understand all of us have strengths & weaknesses; giving you the courage to invest in feedback . Soliciting it, to help yourself grow, and giving it help your colleagues grow.
If this resonates, we'd love to talk!
