    Role Overview

    Thomas & Hutton is seeking an experienced Landscape Architect Project Manager to join its Durham, North Carolina team. This leadership role is ideal for a seasoned landscape architecture professional with a passion for innovative, sustainable design and a strong background managing complex projects from concept through completion.

    The Project Manager will oversee a diverse portfolio of projects, collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, and mentor junior staff—while maintaining the highest standards of design excellence, client service, and project delivery.

    Key Responsibilities

    Project Leadership & Management
    • Lead and mentor a team of landscape architects through all phases of project delivery.

    • Manage projects from conception through construction, ensuring schedules, budgets, and quality standards are met.

    • Oversee project scopes, timelines, and financial performance.

    • Continuously improve project workflows, tools, and delivery processes.

    Design & Collaboration
    • Collaborate with clients, consultants, and internal engineering teams to develop and implement high-quality design solutions.

    • Ensure compliance with industry standards, sustainability goals, and local regulations.

    • Apply sustainable design principles and best practices across project types.

    Client & Business Development
    • Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication and engagement.

    • Support business development efforts including proposal preparation, interviews, presentations, and fee negotiations.

    • Represent the firm through networking and client-facing activities.

    Team Development
    • Guide and support the professional growth of junior landscape architects.

    • Develop and implement strategies to enhance team performance, collaboration, and career development.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture.

    • Professional licensure or registration (RLA/PLA).

    • 8–10+ years of experience in landscape architecture design and project management.

    • Experience across diverse project types (parks, commercial, master-planned communities, etc.).

    • Strong background in site planning and the entitlement process.

    • Proven experience managing project budgets, schedules, and cost estimates.

    • Knowledge of sustainable design principles and practices.

    • Familiarity with local regulations, permitting, and approval processes.

    • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and motivate teams.

    • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to work independently while collaborating in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
