    Role Snapshot

    The Senior Roadway Engineer (Engineer IV) leads roadway design and technical delivery across multiple transportation projects for state and local agencies. This role blends hands-on roadway design, cross-discipline coordination, client interaction, and oversight of junior staff. Ideal for an engineer with strong roadway design fundamentals, CAD proficiency, and the ability to work independently while guiding project components from preliminary design to final PS&E submittals.

    Position Overview

    Ciorba Group is seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer (Engineer IV) to support and lead roadway design tasks across major improvement and corridor projects in Illinois and Indiana. This licensed-level engineer will develop roadway geometry, ADA-compliant design elements, traffic staging/MOT plans, and technical documentation while collaborating with structural, drainage, traffic, and municipal engineering teams. The role requires strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to maintain quality, schedule, and documentation standards across multiple assignments.

     

    Key Responsibilities

    Roadway Design & Technical Execution

    • Lead roadway design tasks including alignments, typical sections, cross sections, intersection geometry, ADA ramps, pedestrian improvements, and MOT/staging.
    • Prepare and review plans, specifications, estimates, design reports, and technical memoranda.
    • Complete engineering calculations and modeling in an organized format suitable for QC review.
    • Ensure compliance with AASHTO, IDOT, INDOT, and local municipal standards.

     

    Coordination & Communication

    • Coordinate with internal discipline teams, consultants, subconsultants, contractors, and public agencies.
    • Conduct or support field reviews, inspections, and design workshops.
    • Identify design conflicts early and support timely solutions to mitigate risk and rework.

     

    Team Leadership & Mentorship

    • Oversee, mentor, and review work performed by Engineers I–III and technical staff.
    • Maintain documentation quality, CAD standards, and established internal workflows.
    • Guide junior staff in professional development and roadway design skill-building.

     

    Operational Support

    • Manage assigned scopes to meet schedule, budget, billability, and QA/QC requirements.
    • Maintain proper documentation, calculations, records, and drawing conventions.
    • Contribute to proposals, scopes, and client communications when needed.

     

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (ABET-accredited).
    • Approximately 6–10 years of roadway or transportation engineering experience.
    • Proficiency in MicroStation and AutoCAD; strong CAD production capability required.
    • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Proven leadership, mentoring, and task-management abilities.
    • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field reviews.
    • Demonstrates accountability, autonomy, flexibility, and adherence to safety and engineering standards.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred (or ability to obtain shortly).
    • Experience with advanced roadway workflows, corridor modeling, and/or Civil 3D.
    • Familiarity with IDOT, INDOT, and municipal/county agency processes.
