  • Responsibilities

    The Success Advocate acts as a mentor and accountability partner for students, serving as the central point of contact in the Pathways program.  The Success Advocate is responsible for assisting students with the college enrollment process and encouraging them to become more self-reliant by orienting them to college policies, procedures, resources, and technology.  They help facilitate student learning to ensure students are successful in navigating the complexities of college from admission through graduation. They provide proactive outreach and support to an assigned caseload of students to ensure student engagement and retention. The Success Advocate builds relationships with students, encourages them to actively engage in the community of JCCC, and connects them with resources as needed to promote goal completion.  

              

    1. SERVE AS COHORT MANAGER FOR STUDENT SUCCESS – Provide expertise in the enrollment process to a defined group of both new and continuing students.  Research and resolve barriers to student goal achievement.  Appropriately refer students to other departments on campus as needed to facilitate student connections with resources.  Meet one-on-one with students to develop an individualized action plan to help them achieve their academic goals. Monitor the progress of each student until these goals are completed.  Assist students in identifying and overcoming obstacles and barriers.  Establish and maintain regularly scheduled communication with students, providing helpful, just-in-time information and follow-up services to ensure student engagement and retention. Actively leverage technology to identify at-risk students and implement proactive intervention strategies that assist in connecting students with appropriate resources and enhance the likelihood of degree completion.

    1. FACILITATE STUDENT LEARNING AS INSTRUCTOR OF NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION AND ONLINE “PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS” COURSE – Provide instruction, guidance and assistance to students regarding the enrollment process, college policies, and tools needed to navigate their college path.  Introduce students to campus resources to enhance student learning and empower students to successfully engage in their college experience.

    2. SERVE AS A LIAISON TO OTHER STUDENT SUCCESS AND ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS – Build strong relationships and work collaboratively with departments within the Student Success and Engagement Branch, the Academic Support Division and other strategic partners college-wide.

    The responsibilities described represent the primary responsibilities of the job.  Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs.

    Required Skills

    • Attention to detail and accurate record-keeping
    • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student information
    • Ability to communicate institutional policies and procedures clearly and accurately
    • Ability to work with a diverse population of students and staff across numerous communication channels
    • Strong collaborator with excellent interpersonal communication skills
    • Strong presentation skills and the ability to communicate well with individuals and groups
    • General computer, data entry, and web knowledge
    • Effective written communication skills as evidenced by application materials

    Required Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in a related field

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

    • One year of experience working with student records or other confidential materials
    • One year of customer service experience
    • One year of data entry experience and the ability to type accurately
    • Experience working with college students of diverse populations
    • Experience with Banner or a related student information system
    • Experience with a CRM (constituent/customer relationship management) system
    • Experience with Microsoft Windows
    • Multi-lingual applicants with conversational ability encouraged
