    The Compliance Intern will learn about and recognize the concepts of the Corporate Compliance Department and its functions. Primary assignments will include that of multiple departmental roles to provide a wide spectrum of experience. Department activities involve compliance-related training and communications; monitoring compliance by team members and third parties; measuring the effectiveness of policies and procedures; and data trends and reporting. Position may also assist with processing consumer complaints received from government agencies and consumer advocacy groups, along with safety and OSHA-related matters. Will propose ideas and recommendations to management regarding learnings, aimed at improving internal processes. Given the nature of the position, the Compliance Intern is expected to observe the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct, and to set an example for other team members. They must also demonstrate company core values in the performance of all job duties.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist with developing compliance programs designed to minimize exposure to regulatory non-compliance. Research, draft and edit compliance policies, including the company’s Code of Conduct. Work with department to review, update, and disseminate policies to team members and make sure standards are followed consistently throughout the company.

    • Identify issues and areas of exposure that can be managed through monitoring, testing or compliance reporting and auditing and communicate recommendations for change to management. Create tools or reports to communicate with management regarding compliance violations and audit findings. Complete detailed summaries of findings related to all audits conducted. Maintain appropriate documentation as to actions and activities taken to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.

    • Grow knowledge of key compliance areas, including consumer financial protection, anti-money laundering, anti-bribery and corruption, third-party management, and privacy laws and regulations. Monitor legislation and regulatory agencies and create summaries that outline content of regulation and impact to the company.

    • Partner with stakeholders to maintain awareness of third-party relationships and conduct risk-based assessments and due diligence (initial and ongoing).

    • Provide training and communications help and make sure updated content, courses, communications, and tools are in proper format and operating effectively. Contribute to compliance and ethics lessons learned across the organization.

    • Assist with answering consumer complaints received from various government, consumer organization, and legal channels within required timeframes. Complaints may be regarding the company’s private label credit practices or related to merchandise quality, store service, etc. Assist with safety projects or OSHA-related matters.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Currently enrolled and pursuing a Legal or advanced degree is preferred but not required

    • Legal knowledge or compliance background preferred

    • Ability to research complex legal issues, summarize regulations and make appropriate recommendations as to impact and action needed

    • Well-developed communication skills (both written and verbal)

    • Ability to apply effective judgment and decision-making skills

    • Strong project management and organizational skills

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Ability to work in Akron, OH when required throughout the summer
