    Summer Internship (1) Dusky Canada Goose Program Cordova, Alaska Ducks Unlimited seeks one (1) highly-motivated intern to join the wildlife team on Chugach National Forest, Prince William Sound management Zone. This 18-week internship from April 9 August 10 will provide an opportunity to work on projects throughout the Zone, but with emphasis to the dusky Canada goose nest island program. This program includes monitoring and maintaining nesting platforms (nest islands) that assist in the nest success of the dusky Canada goose on the Copper River Delta. To accomplish the annual nest island assessment, this position will be part of a field crew in a remote field camp, only accessible by boat, in the heart of the Copper River Delta. Additional projects may include: dusky Canada goose nest searches, shorebird surveys, migratory songbird monitoring (auditory and visual), dusky Canada goose banding, and assessment and removal of invasive species. A strong interest in waterfowl and wetlands ecology, desire to spend long days and early mornings in the field, and determination to get the job done well is required. Experience working in wetlands, identifying waterfowl, invertebrate sampling, and navigating using hard-copy maps are preferred skills. Inquisitive, detail-oriented, and self-motivated applicants are also preferred. Successful applicants will be expected to work safely and effectively in a rural setting without direct supervision. A valid drivers license and clean driving record is required. This position will work in a variety of landscapes including but not limited to wetlands, forests, intertidal zones, and streams. Field work is conducted from remote field camps where boats and planes are common modes of transportation. Much of the work can be physically demanding and may require long days carrying packs weighing up to 30 lbs and walking through wetlands and other challenging terrain. Coastal Alaska weather may be inclement and field crews can expect multiple day rain events in the middle of summer. Successful applicants will be expected to work at least five days each week up to 40 hours/week. Some weekend work will be required. Field work is physically and mentally demanding and takes place under challenging conditions, therefore, only enthusiastic, dedicated individuals should apply. A stipend of $11.25 an hour will be included. Round trip airfare to Cordova, AK, housing, and work vehicles will be provided for this position.
