Catastrophe Modeler Internship (NYC)

New York, NY
Internship
Paid
  • Responsibilities

Lockton Re will offer a Catastrophe Modeling internship during this upcoming summer. The intern will work with advanced catastrophe risk models in support of Lockton Re clients. In addition to exposure to catastrophe modeling, the candidate will be exposed to multiple facets of the reinsurance industry, including client relations, technical service and project management.

We are seeking data-minded individuals who will demonstrate an eagerness to learn, a willingness to contribute, and a passion for analytics. Lockton Re looks for students entering their senior year who are interested in building a career in a fast-paced industry.

    Summer Intern responsibilities

    • Work with models that simulate various natural catastrophes (hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, etc.) and their impact on residential, commercial and industrial structures.
    • Participate in rotational program to learn the various reinsurance “basics”.
    • Immerse yourselves in our Lockton Re culture.
    • Learn the background of catastrophe modeling, including its function, why it exists, and its applications.
    • Learn the basics of the catastrophe modeling workflow inclusive of importing data and performing loss analyses with multiple catastrophe modeling platforms.
    • Assist in the preparation of client deliverables to be provided within active client relationships.
    • Participate on projects to expand the capabilities of the modeling team.
    • Build and peer review reports being sent to clients to ensure the delivery of high-quality results.
    • Collaborate with brokers and actuaries to support ongoing and prospective client relationships.

    Summer Intern qualifications

    • Able and willing to learn new things - hardly anyone comes out of college knowing what reinsurance is let alone catastrophe modeling, so we’ll teach you if you are eager to learn
    • Analytically curious - an inherent interest in developing meaning from data will serve you well as a catastrophe modeler
    • Interested in working with data - models are both the consumers and producers of data, therefore an interest in rolling up your sleeves in large datasets is a key to success on this team
    • Collaborative and team-oriented - sports teams succeed when everyone works together towards a common goal; reinsurance broking is no different
    • A good communicator, both verbally and in writing - telling a compelling story and conveying meaning from data fall at the heart of catastrophe analytics and reinsurance broking
    • Able to think creatively and demonstrate problem-solving skills - new challenges inevitably arise, especially in a new company. Doing the best we can for our customers requires resourcefulness, imagination, and determination
    • Trusted with detailed tasks - details matter, so having a process for reviewing your work to find errors and noticing when something doesn’t look right help to build trust with colleagues, customers and reinsurance partners
    • Adaptable to changing environments - as a start-up company that is growing fast, we are gaining new employees and customers daily, so things move quickly and are constantly changing
