Run an app-based bike marketplace on campus

  • Responsibilities

This job is your opportunity to help out your fellow students, make great money, and solve some significant problems on campus -- like mobility, affordability, congestion, sustainability, and student health.

Baas Bikes is an app that students use to test ride, buy, and sell used bikes, just by using their phone. The app is connected to our Bluetooth-enabled bike lock, so the whole process of someone test riding and buying a bike is automated, and can happen at any bike rack on campus. At any time there can be dozens or hundreds of bikes for sale, and we're looking for someone to manage the marketplace and run it like their own business.

How it works is a Baas lock is used to facilitate the sales process, but the lock doesn't get sold with the bike, it stays chained to the bike rack. So when a bike gets sold, a new bike is put in that lock, the app is updated, and the process continues.

We give you all the tools you need to launch this business: seed capital, the locking technology, admin access to run your marketplace, For Sale signs, marketing materials, pricing guides, and our "best practice community" of students at other schools.

All you need to do is find unused bikes and put them up for sale in the app. And used bikes are everywhere. For example, Texas A&M has 1,500 unused bikes that get abandoned every year -- if those bikes are worth $50 on average -- that's $75,000 worth of bikes!

So how do you capitalize on this on-campus gold mine?

    Responsibilities include:

    • Locating unused student bikes through a tagging process and buying them directly from students via Venmo or PayPal
    • Searching for undervalued bikes being sold through traditional channels (Facebook, Craigslist, OfferUp, Letgo, yard sales, etc)
    • Acquiring those bikes to seed the marketplace (we'll give you seed capital up front, so there is no out of pocket expense)
    • Locking those bikes with the Baas locks around campus in highly trafficked area, near residential buildings
    • Using the Baas Pricing Guide to establish a price for the bike
    • Uploading the bike info to the Baas App - picture, price, etc
    • Putting the special Baas For Sale signs on them
    • Tuning up and minor repair work to get bikes in good condition -- any mechanic skills are very useful here, since you can acquire bikes for less, and your margins will be higher
    • Marketing inventory to other students -- through fliers, social media, word of mouth to student organizations. We will help you here.
    • Helping buyers with any issues (this is done primarily through text message convos)
    • Getting paid when the bikes sell
    • Keeping the inventory fresh, and covering all types and sizes of popular bikes (men's, women's, cruisers, mountain bikes, etc)

You'll be responsible for 10 locks, so you can have 10 bikes for sale at any time. If 4 of those bikes sell each week, for an average of $100 per bike, with the 80% cut, you'll be making $1,280 per month. Obviously, at the beginning of the semesters, the opportunity is much greater. If you can prove out your ability to manage the 10 locks and consistently sell bikes, we'll provide you with more locks. The sky is the limit.

Once you've got the marketplace established, and students know that Baas is the best way to sell a bike, you can also make money just from helping those students with the sale process of their own bike. For acting as a representative for a seller, you can make a 3% commission on the sale.

  • About Us

Baas Bikes is an app that enables students to test ride, buy, and sell used bikes right on campus -- just by using their phone. We're a peer to peer network of students selling bikes to other students. All the bikes sold on our app are locked with our Bluetooth connected locking technology, so the purchase process is completely automated. Bikes are locked to regular bike racks, and buyers can unlock them for a test ride any time. If they like the bike, they just tap Buy in the app and it's theirs. If not, they just relock the bike and try another one.
