    Job Description

    Position Overview The R&D Manager for Solid State Batteries will be responsible for leading global fundamental R&D efforts to integrate solid state battery technology into A123’s large-scale cell manufacturing environment. This individual will be a key contributor in advancing A123's competitive advantage in solid state cell manufacturing by developing material-, electrode-, and cell-level scientific learnings that underpin advanced processing methods, enabling A123 to drive energy density and safety improvements at scale. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of scientific achievement in the areas of Li-ion batteries, electrochemistry, or solid state electrolytes. Additionally, the candidate will have demonstrable technical project management, personnel management, and leadership skills. Primary responsibilities:

    • Working multi-functionally to deploy R&D learnings at low- and high-volume pilot scale;
    • Plan experiments and analyze electrochemical test results for cell chemistry and process validation
    • Interfacing with, and reporting to, material vendors, joint development partners, and customers, both internal and external
    • Developing prototype cell designs, electrode formulations and additive packages to extend cycle life, minimize cell DCR, maximize energy density and abuse tolerance
    • Mentor junior-and senior-level experimental and modeling scientists and engineers to grow their careers and improve their skills
    • Drive generation of intellectual property
    • Building company's brand recognition by showcasing technological achievements at scientific/industry conferences and through publications in peer-reviewed journals

     

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Minimum requirements:

    • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or related technical field
    • 5+ years of experience in commercial lithium-ion technology development
    • 2+ years of experience in personnel management.

    Qualifications:

    • Track record in development of novel battery technology in a commercial setting
    • Strong communication and organizational skills with appropriate detail-oriented level
    • Demonstrated history of working with multinational project teams on tight deadlines
    • Advanced knowledge of Electrochemistry, Li-ion battery technology, and materials science
    • Li-ion battery materials expertise at the fundamental structure/properties level
    • Functional understanding of electrode slurry formulation and characterization and slot-die coating processes
    • Extensive experience on solid electrolyte formulation and processing
    • Resourceful problem solver with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team player as well as provide creative out-of-the-box solutions
