    JOB SUMMARY:

AT CSIS WE ACTIVELY SEEK TO EMPLOY A DIVERSE GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO EMBODY OUR ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES. WE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS TO APPLY, ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM TRADITIONALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. THE HUMANITARIAN AGENDA PRIORITIZES DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION, AND IS BUILDING OFF MANY ONGOING EFFORTS ACROSS CSIS IN THIS REGARD.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is an independent, non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers in government, international institutions, the private sector, and civil society. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of 250 employees working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe. We are guided by a distinct set of values – non-partisanship, independent thought, innovative thinking, cross-disciplinary scholarship, integrity and professionalism, and talent development. CSIS’s values work in concert toward the goal of making real-world impact.

CSIS is seeking an energetic and innovative new Director to lead the Humanitarian Agenda, the only program of its kind in a U.S. think tank today. The program’s core mission is to offer impartial and practical policy-relevant insights and serve as an independent forum for discussion on U.S. leadership in humanitarian policy and practice. The Director will be a proven thought leader on humanitarian issues and capable of leading a policy agenda that can play a constructive role in informing government decision-making. Issues may range from the humanitarian-development-peace nexus to the humanitarian consequences of migration and climate change to ensuring civilian protection in humanitarian settings. The new Director must be agile and an ideas-generator, able to anticipate emerging issues of relevance to the U.S. Government, allied governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations alike. The Director should have deep knowledge about U.S. leadership, funding, and programming to address humanitarian crises, and understand how best to use the platform an independent think tank provides to move a policy agenda forward in Washington and beyond.
