Job Summary You will provide support for Dominions Corporate Risk Engineering group supporting the Corporate Risk Management group during the annual insurance renewal period. In addition to general support of the insurance renewal process and periodic facility inspections, the intern will also provide support to several construction projects. These include the protection and/or loss prevention features of numerous commercial, power generation, and natural gas facilities. All forms of fire detection and protection systems are present in Dominion Energy facilities, including special hazard systems such as clean agent, CO2, low and Hi ex foam, dry chemical, hybrid water mist, and water spray systems are installed in industrial settings across the Dominion Energy fleet. The intern will also participate with the project team in construction projects, such as a major fuel handling system upgrade at a multi-unit power plant, a pipeline expansion project, a modular LNG terminal, and renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities. Project support activities will include participation in the development of fire protection system specifications, design and bid evaluations, construction walkdowns, and participation in and review of system final acceptance tests. The intern will work beside two University of Maryland Fire Protection Enegineering graduates and four licensed Fire Protection Engineers.The intern will assist with tasks involving real "risk assessment and hands-on engineering." Assignments will include applying fire protection engineering principles and standards to develop practical risk reduction solutions. As the intern you will provide real-life examples to assist the individual in the understanding of engineering principles and industrial risk reduction strategies. The position requires a good understanding of related fire protection engineering principles and the ability to apply academics to real-life opportunities. The intern will provide assistance on various natural gas & power generation facility projects. Limited exercise of judgment will be required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of risk reduction alternatives. May interface with other departments, contractors and vendors to gather information and coordinate projects. Perform other duties as requested or assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience - Valid driver's license required - Solid engineering skills commensurate with grade level, - An inquisitive nature, - The ability to follow written and verbal procedures, - Good professional ethics, - Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing). - Planning, organizing, and project skills. - Effective decision making skills. - Ability to coordinate multiple tasks. - Basic computer skills and application of software programs. - Analytical and abstract thinking skills. - Ability to apply engineering theories and concepts to industrial problems. Education Requirements - Must be a full-time student currently working towards completing a ABET accredited Bachelors or Master's degree in Engineering - Fire Protection Engineering preferred - Must have an anticipated graduation date between December 2019 and May 2021 - Must have a GPA or 2.5 or greater Working Conditions Travel 26-50% Test Description No Testing Required Export Control Certain positions at Dominion Energy may involve access to information and technology subject to export controls under U.S. law.
