    The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

    The CSIS Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative seeks a creative, hard-working, and energetic research assistant/associate to work on a range of substantive and administrative activities tied to a specific project within the broader AMTI portfolio. The project focuses on the negative environmental practices of state actors in the South China Sea including land reclamation and illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing. Successful applicants will be comfortable in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. The research assistant/associate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the project including research, editing, logistics and administrative support, website updating, and managing a team of interns.

    The successful candidate will be a team player, possess excellent administrative, communication, research, and writing skills, and demonstrate a keen interest in maritime security and/or maritime law and the international relations of the Indo-Pacific region.

    The minimum annual salary for this position is $55,000.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: • Assisting with development, research, and writing of program reports and other publications. • Editing contributions by outside authors and CSIS experts. • Updating the Initiative’s website and mapping databases, including some elementary web and graphic design. • Processing payments for author honoraria and other expenses. • Assisting with logistics and operations for public and private events. • Coordinating with other programs and experts within CSIS on collaborative projects and administrative issues. • Overseeing the research efforts, social media posts, and other day-to-day activities of a team of two interns.

    KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE: • A Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Political Science, International Law, or a related field, though a Master’s degree is desired • Demonstrated interest in maritime security or maritime law, and the international relations of the Indo-Pacific region • Demonstrated knowledge of and marine ecology and fisheries in the South China Sea • Exceptional research, writing, and communication skills • Strong organizational and time management skills • An ability to work well independently and in groups
