Seattle City Light is now accepting applications for our Pre-Apprentice Lineworker (PAL) Program . This pre-apprenticeship program is a paid, six month probationary training position designed to help individuals gain the necessary skills to become successful Lineworker Apprentices. Lineworkers are critical to providing electric power to City Light's more than 360,000 residential, business, and industrial customers. At City Light, apprentices are an important part of our highly skilled team. Lineworker Pre-Apprentices serve a six-month probationary period during their 1040 hours of training. In order to proceed to the Lineworker Apprenticeship Program, each Pre-Apprentice must successfully attain the final program standards, including: physical capacity requirements, obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), passing working skills requirements and climbing training by the conclusion of the full six months (1040 hours) of training. Failure to meet the standards within the 1040 hours will result in removal from the PAL Program and prevent progression into the Lineworker Apprenticeship. Those who successfully complete the PAL Program will advance to the Lineworker Apprentice Program and serve the standard one-year probationary period as a Lineworker Apprentice. Lineworker Apprentices enter a 3.5 year / 7,000 hour Lineworker Apprenticeship Program learning to work with high voltage electrical equipment in a variety of settings and adverse weather conditions and providing service to customers in the Seattle distribution area. Lineworker Apprentices will receive on-the-job training to perform progressively more difficult, physically demanding, and complex work assignments including (but not limited to): carrying materials and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more; pushing, pulling and rigging large and heavy equipment and materials from positions at heights, on the ground, underground, on ladders, on steel structures, and in confined spaces in proximity to energized lines and equipment and in adverse weather conditions. The work activities include working outside with experienced electrical Lineworkers on established work crews. In addition to the on-the-job training activities, Lineworker Apprentices will be required to successfully complete a minimum 144 hours per year of evening academic training. Upon satisfactory completion of their apprenticeship program and subject to passing journey-level examination, Lineworker Apprentices can advance to the job title of Journey-level Lineworker. All Lineworker Apprentices are required to adhere to the Standards of Apprenticeship as well as the City of Seattle Personnel Rules and any other applicable policies and procedures. Apprentice training standards are carefully overseen by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Council and the PAL Program is approved by and accredited through the State of Washington. Job Responsibilities Lineworkers perform installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems. The work requires expert knowledge of the principles and theories of electrical power distribution, familiarity with electrical codes, regulations and procedures, and the ability to use the tools and equipment of the electrical trades. Judgment is required to select from and apply a variety of guidelines, references and policies. Work assignments are carried out independently after the supervisor sets priorities and assigns personnel and equipment. Job duties of a Lineworker include: Repairs or replaces defective high voltage conductors, insulators and related hardware. Repairs or replaces all overhead and non-network underground transformers. Inspects and installs underground vaults, conduit and duct runs; installs new cable and equipment. Installs streetlight standards, fixtures, relays. Strings wire and cables for electrical power transmission, distribution or traffic light circuits. Inspects and troubleshoots electrical systems and equipment to repair malfunctions and restore electrical power. Inspects and repairs overhead distribution lines, towers, switches, and utility poles and structures. Physical Job Demands / Work Environment: Lineworkers work outdoors in all types of weather. Lineworkers regularly perform work at varying heights, in and around high voltage and energized equipment, in construction areas and around moving traffic. The work requires prolonged physical exertion and lifting of objects that weigh more than fifty (50) pounds. Requires working evenings, weekends, holidays and long hours during emergency and outage situations. Qualifications Seattle City Light is committed to training people for a variety of craft positions in the electrical utility industry. Education: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). In addition, documentation to verify the successful completion (with a grade of C or 70%, or better) of algebra, geometry, or trigonometry OR documentation to verify successful completion of Seattle City Light's Basic Electricity and Math (BEAM) class. Experience: None required. Certification/License: Valid Washington State Driver's License. As part of the PAL program, workers will undergo commercial driver's training and must obtain a Washington State Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A). Instructions on how to obtain your Complete Driving Record: Driving records must be dated on or after September 4th, 2018 Candidates may obtain a copy of their "Complete Driving Record" online at or at a Department of Licensing office. The cost is $13 per record. Please note: Select the "Complete Driving Record" option, NOT the "Employment Driving Record" option. Out of State candidates will need to go to their respective Department of Licensing and follow their procedures for obtaining a driving record. Candidates will not be reimbursed for the cost. Please submit your "Complete Driving Record" as an attachment when submitting your application. For your application to be complete, you must submit this required documentation. Incomplete application will not be considered. Current, Regular-Status City of Seattle Employees do not need to submit this driving record with their application. Temporary City of Seattle Employees and former City of Seattle Employees are required to submit this documentation. Veterans may receive Veteran's Preference points added to their overall passing test score. To receive Veteran's Preference , you must have served in the armed forces AND have been honorably discharged. The hiring selection process for Seattle City Light's Apprenticeship Programs are highly competitive. The Hiring Process includes: Review of application and required documentation to assess eligibility for the program. Written test on word problems, math and algebra, mechanical reasoning, and worker attributes. Working test demonstrating knowledge of tools and electrical equipment, and the ability to perform work functions and follow directions. Oral panel interview . Reference check of three work related references of your choice will be contacted. Criminal history check as part of City Light's Personnel Risk Assessment program.
