INTERN - PLANT PATHOLOGY Marrone Bio Innovations 6 reviews - Davis, CA Internship Marrone Bio Innovations is seeking a student intern in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology to assist with laboratory studies related to the development of microbial biopesticides. The intern will support scientists in a variety of laboratory experimentation as required including biological assays and plant propagation. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about plant pathology in a lab setting. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: * Maintain and propagate plant pathogen cultures. * Culturing and isolation of microbes using general liquid and solid media as well as selective media. * Set up, execute and evaluate microbe and plant-based bioassay. * Prepare materials required for experiments such as various types of media, buffers, etc. * Utilize compound microscope in support of bioassays. * Record data and results in an organized fashion. * Keep the laboratory clean and organized (clean glassware, growing containers, benches and floors as needed). * Other duties as assigned Schedule will be established with supervisor upon hiring. QUALIFICATIONS A successful candidate should be a quick-learner, innovative, flexible, creative and team oriented. Currently working towards a Bachelors degree in biological sciences. Preferably, an emphasis in microbiology, plant pathology, plant sciences or a related field. Hands-on lab experience (through classes or an internship) a plus. A professional and positive attitude. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL FUNCTIONS: * The Plant Pathology Intern must have manual dexterity sufficient to handle small items and be able to perform light physical, non-strenuous daily activities of a productive/technical nature. * Must be able to function in working conditions that are adequately lighted, moderately heated or air-conditioned, and in an indoor office, laboratory, and production setting. * In the course of daily activities, interns may be occasionally required to lift up to 30 pounds, are frequently exposed to disagreeable odors and may be exposed to toxic or caustic substances. * Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in workload priorities, ability to prioritize tasks, ability to maintain confidentiality. * Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods. * Good time management, organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task. * Commitment to work at least 10 hours per week during the school year * Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point).
