    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The ideal candidate will have a background in a physical science discipline, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent with 5 years of experience integrating and using complex instrumentation in a biotech field. The candidate will be responsible for integrating and testing all aspects of our screening platform including hardware, software, and consumables. They should be self-motivated and competent at designing experiments and test plans to evaluate and improve system capabilities and robustness. 

    The role will require close collaboration with Engineering, Assay and Screening Teams. The position is 100% on site at 1859 Inc.’s San Diego headquarters.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Leading and participating in cross-functional planning, coordination, and task execution across the spectrum of systems engineering and integration activities.

    • Working within the organization to collect and define system requirements.

    • Supporting prototype module builds and providing feedback for module level testing.

    • Integrating hardware/software, electronics, micro-fluidic and opto-mechanical modules into a system level instrument.

    • Developing and executing test plans to verify the hardware, software, and system performance.

    • Designing experiments, evaluating data, and making recommendations based on data.

    • Interfacing with cross-discipline teams to ensure design requirements are met and product meets quality standards.

    • Working closely with 1859’s Engineering Team to achieve optimal design decisions.

    • Providing engineering support to our Screening Team and suite of screening platforms as required.

     

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent related field with 5 years of industrial or equivalent experience. 

    • Experience with integration and testing of complex optofluidic instruments is a must.

    • Excellent troubleshooting and data analysis skills.

    • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to adapt within a fast-changing environment.

    • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

    • Excellent written and communication skills.

    HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

    • Experience in all phases of the product development cycle from basic research, development, manufacturing, and field support.

    • Array based or droplet fluidic experience

    • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Python, XML)

    • Software QA experience

    • Microfabrication and PDMS soft lithography experience
