    BARD Automated Released Glycan Sample Preparation Automation Internship Overview

    Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

    Biologics Analytical Research and Development (BARD) is responsible for the development of analytical strategies to support drug development and commercialization efforts throughout the product development lifecycle. This specific internship is within the Research and Early Development (RED) group which operates at the interface of Discovery and Development and is critical for understanding potential critical quality attributes of biologic modalities and their related derivatives.

    The goal of this project is to first define an automated sample preparation solutions which is extensible to smaller or larger numbers of samples as required. The basic goal is to reduce manual intervention steps as much as possible, however there may be steps where this is still necessary. An assessment of manual preparation vs. automated will be conducted to illustrate equivalent or superior data quality using automation.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Develop a fully executable automation method for automated released glycan sample preparation.
    • Enable transfer method additional locations as necessary.
    • Address and/or identify bottlenecks/limitations which may inhibit widespread adoption of the method.
    • Compile complete Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to enable others to take advantage of the developed method.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry, Biology, or other related discipline.
    • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Expected graduation date between December 2024 - July 2025.
    • Knowledge of basic glycan structure.
    • Exposure to protein sample preparation and liquid chromatography.
    • Familiarity of programming is a plus, particularly Python.
