2024 Genomic Research Center Oncology Genetics Intern Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

This internship opportunity is a collaborative effort by the Computational Oncology and Methods Development groups within AbbVie’s Genomics Research Center. The Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, human genetics, pharmacogenomics, and multiple population cohorts (over 1 million genomes) and works across all R&D, and other areas such as process sciences and corporate strategy. The GRC plays an integral role towards our goal of developing world class genetics and genomics research, focusing on finding the right targets and helping us better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials.

Under co-supervision of two senior scientists from two collaborative groups, the intern will primarily analyze AbbVie’s Real-World-Data (RWD) omics population cohort in solid tumors to reveal associations between germline variants, demographic diversities, and treatment outcomes. The analysis aims to reveal racial, ethnic, and gender patterns of cancer susceptibility or drug resistance associated germline variants, and to evaluate how these diversities may impact cancer therapeutic response or adverse events. The intern’s project will inform strategies and recommendations to improve cancer care equity and diversity, which we believe is an imperative yet under-explored aspect of RWD genomics research.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • With intern managers, review literature and human genetics reference cohorts to generate an analysis plan for associating germline variants with demographic diversities,

    • Collaborate with intern managers to process, quality control, and structuralize germline variant data from the internal RWD solid tumor cohort.

    • Drive the analysis to test hypothesis of germline genetics diversity associated with race, ethnicity, and gender, and treatment outcome.

    • Communicate and present the research progress to our internal RWD working group, computational oncology, and genomics community.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently pursuing a Master’s or PhD degree in computational biology, genome biology, human genetics, biostatistics, computer science, or related fields.

    • Hands-on experience with NGS data analysis and at least one general purpose data science language (R, Python, etc).

    • Comfortable working with Linux and an on-premise high-performance computing environment.

    • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with cancer genomics research.

    • Experience with DNA-seq variant calling pipelines or method development.

    • Experience with statistical genetics approaches (GWAS, QTL, etc).

    • Familiarity with common population genetics cohorts such as UKBiobank or FinnGen.

    • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

    • Self-motivated; ability to execute with limited supervision and direction. Can work independently.
